James Suckling scored this wine 99 points saying this is a fantastic and refined Blanc de Blancs. So layered and complex, with lemon curd, chalk, hazelnuts, pastries, baked apples and almond croissants. Structured and tightly wound, with almost imperceptible bubbles. Delicious salty notes at the end. Beautiful. Drink or hold.

Wine Information

The year 2012 has proven to be an excellent Champagne vintage. This highly contrasting 2012 vintage was characterised by a succession of climatic events that made for particularly challenging conditions for the vines. A mild spell in February was followed by periods of frost in March and again in May with the added impact of hailstorms affecting multiple regions between April and July. Strong periods of sunshine then ensued, without excessive ...

Vintage 2012

The next most exceptional vintage since 2008. A truly difficult growing season saw severe frosts in the winter. March brought warmth but early budbreak made the vines vulnerable to spring frosts. Overall, the early growing season was wet, and mildew became a serious issue. However, conditions improved dramatically in the later summer months. An August heatwave resulted in a rapid accumulation of sugar, but fortunately the nights remained cool,...

Written Notes

“As usual, the 2012 Comtes de Champagne is a classic blend of the five Côte des Blancs grands crus Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. This is as classic a recipe as it gets, and it works like a dream. Right upon launch now, it holds back plenty but also gives generously, promising a lot. It's rich and expressive on the nose, with gorgeous toast-lined fruit of the utmost purity. Comtes de Champagne's hallmark toasty layers are already there and increasing. The palate is intense and structured, coming with fine nervosity and tension. Refined, linear and long. This is sheer perfection already, but it's greatly ageworthy. Despite the small yields of the year, an average good volume of Comtes was produced.”  97-98

Intense Champagne colour. Fine nose with aroma reminiscent of hazelnuts, brioche, white blossoms, elegant minerality and hints of flintstone. On the palate opulent yet elegant with ripe fruit, hazelnuts, hints of lemon zest and white blossoms. Excellent length.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is green-yellow, and looking clear, youthful and light. On the nose it is youthful, open, intense, charming, fresh and refined. The taste is fresh, voluptuous, focused, fruity, robust, refined, and dry, and high in acidity, medium-bodied, with complex, well-structured, perfectly balanced, well-integrated structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has white fruits, toasty, citrus, mineral and floral flavours. The finish is long, lingering, pure, vibrant and flavorful. This wine is sophisticated, outstanding and impressive. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years.
