The Story

The wine-growing village of Flagey-Échezeaux lies in the " Plain ", so-called, between Vougeot and Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits. Facing east, the Grands-Échezeaux vines are a prolongation of Musigny following the North-South axis of the Côte, but more regular and less broken in their layout. At the bottom end, the " Climat " known as La Combe d'Orveau separates them from Musigny. The Échezeaux vineyards, for their part, divide the Clos d...

Vintage 1990

1990 VINTAGE in Burgundy

This is probably the vintage of reference for many people in Burgundy. Exceptional climatic conditions allowed an abundant crop to mature perfectly and yield some most sensational wines in both red and white. Written Notes

The 1990 DRC Echezeaux had wet bamboo and tree frog in its nose, with The Mogul finding ‘Lord of the Rings trees.’ We were on the same page, although my trees didn’t walk and talk lol. There was lots of rainforest action in this DRC, with a cedary pitch. It was a tasty and complex Burg (94).

Fully mature colour. Rich, spicy and aromatic, if not that stylish on the nose. More 1990 than Echézeaux. Full bodied, concentrated, balanced. Good backbone and depth, in a slightly gamey sort of way. Very good indeed. Now to 2020.

Moderately pale cherry red colour. Elegantly wild nose with cherries and cranberries, touch of volatile aromas, licorice and smoke with earthy aromas. Dry, crisp palate with mellow tannins and moderate fruit intensity of ripe brambles and violety nuances. Long balanced little two-dimensional finish. Decant for 2 hours. At its peak in 2020.
