The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

Vintage 1990

1990 VINTAGE in Burgundy

This is probably the vintage of reference for many people in Burgundy. Exceptional climatic conditions allowed an abundant crop to mature perfectly and yield some most sensational wines in both red and white. The white wines have maintained their elegant aromas and freshness which has made them even more appealing, whilst the reds are concentrated and well built with tannins which remain firm but smooth. To be enjoy...

Written Notes

We were back to the spectacular with a 1990 DRC Richebourg. There were loads of vitmains in this rich, saucy and sappy red. Aromas of tree bark and green moss supported massive t ‘n a. Its palate was Superbad, not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good lol. Minty pine flavors tickled the roof of my mouth. This bottle was about as good as it gets for this wine (98).

The 1990 Richebourg Grand Cru is a wine that I have been fortunate enough to taste three times before. It has a “spherical” nose, if you can picture that, and inside the sphere is copious red fruit laced with hints of traditional Japanese green tea, undergrowth and ferrous scents, as if part of this Richebourg was forged by a blacksmith. The palate is, as always, hugely powerful and yet paradoxically refined, with a smoothness that makes you feel giddy. It builds and builds in the mouth, revealing incredible volume toward the bravura finish. Immense. Tasted at the DRC/Leroy comparative dinner in Hong Kong.

The DRC produced splendid wines in 1990, and the Richebourg is close to reaching its plateau of maturity. A dark ruby color reveals lightening at the edge. The stunning aromatics offer intense aromas of spring flowers, black fruits, licorice, and toasty new oak. Fleshy and medium to full-bodied, with a velvety-textured palate, and sweet fruit, this smoky, rich, complex red Burgundy can be drunk now and over the next decade.

Fully mature colour. Fat, rich, volutuous nose. Full and aromatic. Very fresh and beautifully balanced. Much more Richebourg than 1990. Lots of wine here. Splendid quality. Now to 2020 plus.
