The Story

“As if, in this square of earth, the gods had bequeathed us a memory of the fascinating vestige of a timeless perfection.” — Richard Olney. The wine of Prince de Conti, she is velvet, seduction and mystery. It is the most Proustian of all great wines.

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is without question the most famous estate in Burgundy and arguably the greatest, producing some of the best wines in the world. It is probably one of the mos...

2006 Harvest

A vigneron's challenge again !

At the time of this writing, the vineyards, relieved of their fruit, have begun to change colour. The soft October sun is caressing the red and gold hills. The villages are quiet again after the hubbub of the harvest. The streets are filled with generous fragrances coming from the wineries where fermentations are proceeding. The birth of this new vintage is a real pleasure to the senses !

Vintage 2006

2006 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The personality of Burgundy wines makes the difference

A charmer. Such is the epithet most frequently employed when Burgundy's newest vintage is evoked. Nearly two months after the grape harvest, and following a year typified by rather fantastical weather, Burgundy is finally catching its breath. The 2006 vintage, a preoccupying one which never allowed an idle moment, both in the vineyards and in the cellars, exc...

Written Notes

The 2006 DRC Romanee Conti was neither last nor least. It was much more sensual and elegant than the LT in the nose, with more subtlety and complexity, though. It was more toasty, with aromas of cinnamon, baked bread, stemmy goodness, black cherry and also a glazed goodness. The palate had incredible spice and foresty fun; it hit the highest note on the piano. There was a divine delicacy to the RC, its palate endless like a ballerina who never leaves its toes. Aubert noted the ‘justability’ of the RC versus the ‘masculinity’ of the RC.

DRC Burgundy 2006 Tasting Regarding the 2006 vintage it stands out in the whole DRC range as a delicate and feminine vintage with vibrancy and warm spicy character dominated by clove and Asian spices. DRC CONTI 2006 - 95 points. Moderately intense, ruby red colour. Although the complex nose shows rich Christmas spicy aromas of cloves, cinnamon and hints of licorice, it is still closed. On palate the wine shows greatness in its density, concentration and vibrancy with immense balance and elegant structure. Vivid acidity is shining through the long lingering finish with tobacco, cappuccino and floral tones. Aristocratic wine, pars above all the rest.

“Here too is a very reserved yet ultra classy and refined, indeed even ethereal nose that is quite simply kaleido- scopic in its breadth, combining red, blue and black fruits with spice, earth, minerality and a hint of underbrush that stands aside for the perfectly balanced, pure and stylish medium full flavors that are very firmly but not aggres- sively structured while delivering flat out unbelievable length yet all the while remaining completely understated in personality. As are all the very best vintages of RC, this is spherical with nothing out of place and this will age ef- fortlessly for decades. The La Tâche is truly spectacular but there is simply another dimension of depth present here. A wine of sheer class and the epitome of the phrase ‘power without weight’.”(97pts BH)

More pink than garnet and especially bright, even glossy. Aromas are both sweetly fruited and just a little savoury. A mildly meaty and darker character to the fruit. Overlaid on all that a fine oaky spice. Fine and tight like a pressed suit. Just a little peppery. Already fragrant and juicy even though there is a real depth of unopened fruit and savour. Fine and deceptively firm. Lost count of the Caudalies (the units used by some in Burgundy to measure length). (JH)

2006 ROMANÈE-CONTI GRAND CRU This is a very serious, deep and dark nose that immediately catches your attention without giving anything away. A mystery that’s impossible to ignore and even more hard to put into words. It’s obviously completely undeveloped at five years old but still offers plenty of intriguing. In the mix with mushroom, spices, a floral touch and earthy notes a very pure dark fruit expression appear. Like watching a sky filled with stars. A completely stunning but undeveloped palate with ethereal dark fruit that’s just super focused, seamless and filled with grace. Dense and concentrated without ever being heavy. Almost the opposite. The dark red fruit is joined by Asian spices and earthy notes but nothing except elegance is there in abundance. This is nothing short of complete harmony and amazing length that caresses your palate with minerals. Stunning! Drink 2020-2040+ 97+p
