Parker 100 p /  Long-time readers know that I am often much more critical of older wines than many other writers. To merit high ratings, an older wine must still be fully alive with its personality intact. With that in mind, I have to say that the 1929 DRC Richebourg is one of the most extraordinary wines I have ever tasted. A medium garnet color reveals orange and rust at the edge. The wine remains intact, with a compelling fragrance. A huge ...

The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it ne...

Written Notes

Excellent weather conditions during the whole year. Very hot summer, especially the end of it. Only three days of rain in September, but that saved the grapes from too much stress. A big crop was harvested under perfect conditions.
Very old looking, dusty bottle without capsule. Decanted only for 30 minutes, which was not enough. Very dark, deep colour, even for the vintage. It took almost 1.5 hours until the bouquet really opened. Marvellous perfumed nose, very appealing. Lots of chocolate and black fruit aromas. On the palate very full of still some tannic presence. Very silky and smooth texture. Great concentration.
