The Story

The Montrachet family consists of grand five Grands Crus grown in the two villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. These two share the Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet appellations. Chevalier and Bienvenues belong to Puligny, Criots belongs to Chassagne. These Grands Crus are the most southerly of the Côte-d'Or, and lie between Meursault in the north and Santenay in the south. Their origins go back to the Middle Ages - the work...

Vintage 1998

1998 VINTAGE in Burgundy

The 1998 vintage was born under good auspices and has real potential. In spite of the occasional capricious weather conditions, the harvest has given us wines full of promise ? some fruity and seductive, others meaty and more structured.

After brief cold spells in January and February, the vines enjoyed temperatures above the seasonal average in March. This mild weather was interrupted by cold and rainy condition...

Written Notes

The 1998 DRC Montrachet had a musky and wintry nose.  It was delicate, feminine and floral on its nose, but its palate was briny and spiny.  This was an excellent Montrachet but just short of outstanding (94).

The 1998 Montrachet is another wine that is quite complete today. A lovely interplay of textures and flavors opens up effortlessly in the glass. Orange/apricot marmalade, butter and sweet spice are all pushed forward in an ample, unctuous Montrachet that delivers notable breath and textural resonance with plenty of tropical overtones from the presence of botrytis. This is another vintage that is very much in the sweet spot today.

  • 94p

Notes of Botrytis Cinerea (also known as noble rot) are evident in the hedonistically appealing, bright gold-colored 1998 Montrachet's nose. Its honeyed spice and vanilla aromas are followed by a decadently sexy personality. This round, hyper-rich wine is crammed with overripe fruits, touches of caramel, and French toast soaked in syrup. It is magnificently flavorful and pleasing yet does not have the capacity to gain in complexity with cellaring. Drink this spicy fruit bomb over the next 5-6 years.
