95 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Classic and very ripe mature burg fruit intermingles with a wonderful array of spices, especially anise and soy all of which are framed by a touch of caramel. The flavors are extremely rich, sweet and wonderfully concentrated with a deep, very sweet essence of pinot finish that still retains glimpses of its former power. The tannins are fully resolved and the finish is nothing but pure silk and velvet. T...

The Story

Well-cared for vines, strictly controlled yields and as late as possible harvest produces an aromatic and opulent wine. Deeply coloured, La Tâche develops a palate of extraordinary aromas of dark fruits, truffle and spices.

Rich and concentrated, its bouquet releases infinite tones that melt in the mouth to form a lovely ensemble – always exceptional, even in the difficult vintages. Hence in 1950 and 1951, it was the only wine in the domain...

Written Notes

There aren’t too many events that begin with a Jeroboam of 1971 DRC La Tache as an aperitif!  Well, here we were, and this Jero delivered a fabulous experience.  It had a deep, dark nose that was a little woodsy but more on the autumnal side with some brick, rust and rose fruit behind it.  It had black fruits but also had menthol and cream to go with its great richness and lots of body.  Its acidity was endless, and the only complaint I might muster was that there was a touch too much forest floor.  Its citricity and brick flavors housed its finish.  It wasn’t the peak of what this wine can deliver, but it was close (98J).

La Tache 1971/ Fine looking bottle with excellent level. Bright, moderately intense cherry red colour. The very youthful nose is rich and delicate full of ripe red berries mainly cherries and floral aromas. Dry, fresh acidity and very firm tannic wine with very intense fruitiness. Long mineral red fruit finish. This La Tâche seems to be at its perfect stage right now with enough complexity and supple balanced structure. Can easily keep for another 10 to 15 years more.

Very sweet, extremely alcoholic, yet also somewhat fuzzy and lacking precision, the 1971 La Tache is still an outstanding wine because of its voluptuous texture, and thick, juicy, succulent flavors. The color is nearly brown, but the nose remains intense and provocative. This wine is living on borrowed time as there is little grip or structure. Run, don't walk, to guzzle this vintage.
