The Story

Lying between Flagey-Échezeaux (home of the ÉCHEZEAUX appellation) and Nuits-Saint-Georges, Vosne-Romanée occupies a middle position in the Côte de Nuits. The vines grow at altitudes of 250 to 310 metres and face east or, in some cases, slightly south of east. Vosne-Romanée, the central jewel in the necklace of appellations which is the burgundian côte, is not content with holding a mere four aces but boasts a total of six Grands Crus, each on...

Vintage 1959

Burgundy: A record crop of magnificent wines, legendary and still very good. Full but soft-textured.  After a number of difficult vintages and small crops, finally a great vintage arrived with the rare combination of sufficient quantity and high quality.

Written Notes

In 1959 a big crop was expected from the beginning. Indeed the yields were remarkably generous, but at the same time the fruit was fullyripe. The summer was dry and not too hot, with just a little rain at the beginning of September. The 1959 are normally rich and complex like this Echezeaux. The DRC Grand Echézeaux 1959 we enjoyed here was in excellent condition. Ullage was 3 cm from the cork. What a huge depth and complexity! Fruity, rich, fleshy, and round stylish wine. This is much finer than the modern-day Echézeaux. Superb concentration and lovely, harmonious long finish. Drink in ten years.
