Lastly, there was a 1966 DRC Romanee Conti.  There actually was a 1978 and a 1971, but they were both DQ’d.  That was a tough pill to swallow, but everyone was still giddy for all the other great bottles.  The ’66 was exotic and sweet, a bit of a candygram compared to the others, with some exotic apricot to it.  Acidity again unfurled on its finish, a trend for all the wines as they got older.  The wine ended on a tropical note, and the day ended on a high note thanks to this legendary tasting (95).

Dark garnet still with a very polished textured and plenty of dried strawberry and toffee on the nose. It’s full and seemingly chewy with a softness and decadence. Reminds me of when I first tasted this with Aubert de Villaine at his house in 1983. So gorgeous now.

Another very racy, lacy wine but this one is really luscious and extraordinarily long. There’s perhaps a very slightly metallic note but also amazing concentration for a 40-year-old wine. Long. Sweet and jewelly. Very, very long and powerful. Another palate punch of a wine (like the Tâche 1966) and yet so elegant and charming too.
