The Story

Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named after the beautiful, large stones found in its unique wine-growing terroir. This exceptional ecosystem produces fine, elegant, tasty wines, with a long finish – in short, archetypal Saint-Julien wines.

Perched on an exceptional site with incomparable views over the Gironde estuary, in the centre of a hundred-year-old park, Ducru-Beaucaillou is a majestic, Victorian-style castle, which has, over time, become one of the great symbols of the Médoc. Unusually for Bordeaux, it is built directly above the barrel cellars, enveloping its owners, who have lived here for over sixty years, in the sumptuous aromas of their wine.

Today, the estate is managed by the company Jean Eugène Borie SA, which is owned by Mrs Borie, her daughter Sabine Coiffe and her son Bruno-Eugène, CEO since 2003, the third generation of the Borie family to head the estate.

There are very close links between this estate and the five families who have been its successive owners.

The grapes are all harvested manually. They are sorted in the vines on mobile tables to avoid contact between unhealthy and healthy grapes during transport to the vat room. The vinification of each plot is done individually to optimise the choice of blends. Moreover, the fermentations are carried out separately and customized to take account of terroir, grape variety and vintage characteristics. We generally operate gentle extraction and keep the must at traditional temperatures with moderate lengths and frequencies of pumping-over.The press drains off continuously into barrels to facilitate the selection of the press-wine batches. Malolactic fermentation is managed in vats for optimal control.

The wine is barrelled in duly identified individual batches immediately after malolactic fermentation. Blending takes place during the first racking operation; for Ducru Beaucaillou, between 50 and 80% of new barrels are used according to the richness of the vintage. The barrels (225L Bordeaux barrels, French oak) are supplied by 5 carefully selected cooperages giving every guarantee. The wine is matured for 18 months in accordance with Medoc traditions for classified growths. Bottling is performed with special care in regard to both oenological controls and homogenisation of the overall batch. The 5 cork makers supplying the estate have signed a detailed and stringent quality charter.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou : our 2000 vintage

Château Tasting notes-
The colour is very concentrated in tones of
purple violet. The nose is impressive by its complexity and intensity: charming notes of black current, red fruits, enhanced by a slight touch of vanilla and flowers. In the mouth, the attack is rich with silky and elegant tannins. The finish is long and fruity.
The Ducru Beaucaillou 2000 is racy and elegant, it is a rich, full-bodied and complex wine with a wonderful finesse of the fruit.
Characteristics of the 2000 vintage -

The weather
The winter was mild with very little rain. April and May were warm and moderately rainy. In June, the weather improved but the real summer only came mid-July. Although from then the grapes ripened gently and slowly. The very dry climate of August and September was very beneficial to the concentration and improved the maturity of the grapes. The sanitary state at the eve of the harvest was good: very good phenolic maturity and a strong anthocyan concentration. The harvest began September 24th and ended October 7th.
- 2000 vintage blend The blend consists of 30% Merlot and 70% Cabernet Sauvignon.
- Serving suggestions Advice for drinking: To hold Temperature: 16-18°C (60-64°F)

Vintage 2000

Weather conditions / The 2000 vintage was proclaimed from the start as one of the best vintages of modern times. In the spring of 2003, I had many opportunities to find out if we really had a true dream vintage on our hands.

During the 2000 harvest, while doing a “personal inspection” in the vineyards, I noticed that something extraordinary was on the way. The grapes looked extremely healthy.

While the sorting table was rolling, I observed that there were few leaves, stems and weeds among the grapes. This is why sorting the grapes was so easy and quick. This must be one of the characteristics of the 2000 vintage, because normally even great vintages require a lot of work at the sorting table.

The 2000 vintage is a classic, extravagant and extremely long Bordeaux with dark and extremely dense wines, which have a huge concentration of fruit, length and superbly concentrated tannins. The tannin is not allowed to dominate, as it is well enveloped by the fruit. A scent of under-ripeness is only present in a few wines. One of the hallmarks of this vintage is an intense, deep aroma of dark berries, such as blueberries, blackberries and black cherries.

All red grape varieties have reached perfect maturity, including Bordeaux's most temperamental and unruly grape variety, Petit Verdot. Petit Verdot brings to wines the long-awaited addition of backbone and power.

Additionally, the grapes for whites, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle, ripened perfectly and produced extremely fine dry white wines. The sweet white wines have unfortunately transformed into some light, elegant and charming wines, based 100% on the September harvest. From October 11, it rained a lot in Bordeaux and this continued until the end of the year.

Written Notes

The ’03 was paired with a nose that had ‘‘82 goodness,’ I wrote. It was nutty and creamy with rich earth and spice aromas, and a kiss of oak in a hot way. I really thought about this being an ’82 for a bit, but it turned out to be the 2000 Ducru Beaucaillou. This was class in a glass and a long and special wine. Its acid unfurled slowly yet surely and let everyone know this is a wine in it for the long haul. If you love claret, you should buy this wine whenever you see it, it should be double in price (96).

Tasted in November 2022. 70% Cabernet Sauvignon + 30% Merlot. Very intense on the nose with ripe blackcurrants, tobacco, red meat, and truffles, Potent and concentrated, it has a strong backbone and depth and excellent midpalate and structure. It is sophisticated and rich. Simply an outstanding effort and wine with an enormously long live-span.
