This was announced by the vendor who comes from Northern Germany.  The bid price at the Munich auction for the 169 year old bottle is 41,520 Euro. The estimated average trade prize as per the catalogue is at 83,040 Euro. The auction has been organised by Germany’s biggest wine auction company Koppe & Partner...

The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

This great vintage could be named as the greatest vintage in the history of Sauternes and d’Yquem. It gained great glory and publicity when a Russian Grand Duke Constantine, the brother of Tsar Alexander II, visited Bordeaux in 1859 and placed on order of 1200 bottles of the 1847 Château d’Yquem with the highest price ever recorded at the time. After tasting this wine several times, one can really understand the Duke’s actions. Amber-gold coloured wine with rich honeyed nose. So lusciously sweet and delicate on the palate. Harmonious balance of minerals, acidity and viscous texture forms together a wonderfully integrated immensely long aftertaste. Wine that makes you swallow your tongue.

The big issue of the day was whether this of the 1811 was 'better'. (Both were absolutely extraordinary. The 1847 gave me more pure tasting pleasure, but apparently this wonderfully pure scent of raspberries and vanilla cream had been apparent on the 1858 and the 1869 tasted previously, whereas there is nothing quite like the 1811 for intensity and youthfulness.) Relatively light tawny-amber. Extraordinary nose, at first perfectly ripe, warm raspberries and then heady vanilla cream. Beautifully balanced. Gentle. Delicate. Perfect texture. Nothing could be finer. 26 and probably still climbing, although the 1811 will outlast it. Tasted: 01-Apr-2002

Yquem 1847 / According to Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces, whole production of d'Yquem in this vintage was sold in bulk to negociants in Bordeaux, which meant no chateau bottling. "Our" bottle had a label with the name of the negociant responsible for bottling (F.W.Hyllested Bordeaux) and sufficient with red sealing wax on top of the cork. The colour was simply spectacular – like 1947! This wine had nose of camphor/camphor and cloves and tasted of the same on the palate with some sweetness. It had neither passed away nor collapsed, but was quite entertaining and special wine, and a 158 years old curiosity.

Wine Advocate #103
Feb 1996
Robert M. Parker, Jr. 100 Drink: N/A
What is so remarkable about this series of wines is that the 1811 and 1847 Yquems are the two greatest Yquems I have ever tasted, eclipsing my Yquem reference point, the 1921. Both were unctuous, thick, extraordinarily complex wines with remarkable quantities of botrytised, honeyed fruit that dominated their aromatics and flavors. As with all of these ancient vintages, the bottles were authenticated by Christie's Michael Broadbent. The 1847 Yquem would have received more than 100 points if possible. The wine is huge and massive, with a surprisingly youthful color, remarkable honeyed and botrytised flavors, staggering richness, and a finish that lasted 40+ seconds. The question that must be asked is whether the great modern day Yquem vintages will last as long? I say, yes, though I doubt any of my readers will live long enough to find out what the 1975, 1976, 1983, 1986, or 1989 will taste like at age 148!

Longtime readers know I am a fruit fanatic, and if a wine does not retain this essential component, it is not going to receive a satisfactory review.

The notes for this wine are taken from the description of Series V - Flight D of the 1995 tasting conducted in Munich by Helga and Hardy Rodenstock. Many years after the tasting from which this note derives allegations were made concerning the authenticity of old and rare bottles of wine sold by Hardy Rodenstock to collectors around the world. The matter has been the subject of numerous articles, litigation and at least one book. Mr. Parker believes that the wines served to him at this tasting were authentic so this note and the others from that specific tasting continue to be posted on eRobertParker.com.
