Coming in with 139 degrees residual sugar and a pH of 4.75, this is an Yquem that is unequivocally top of the pile in 2008. A light straw color with green tints in the glass. The bouquet is just wonderful, very perfumed with aromas of apricot, acacia honey and white flowers. A degree less clarity than the 2007, but perhaps more nuanced, more honeyed. The palate is a little more viscous than the 2007, lacquers the mouth with honey, apricot and ...

The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

A year of capricious weather, with alternating hot and cold, including frost in April that did no great harm, but reduced the potential crop. A cold, dry period arrived in September, causing slow ripening in Sémillon conducive to great aromatic purity. The end result is a subtle combination of richness and a rare vivaciousness.

Château d’Yquem’s first harvest took place three hundred years earlier, in 1593, when Jacques de Sauvage purchased...

Written Notes

Good looking normal size bottle and in an perfect condition. Colour is gold and and looking clear. On the nose it is wide, seductive, complex and round. The taste is full, round, elegant, perfumed, and sweet, warming, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with multi-dimensional structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has vanilla, caramel, honey and floral flavours. The finish is endless and lingering. This wine is masterpiece. I paid around 200-500€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least 30min before tasting. Good value for money. I do recommend.

Golden. Apricots, honey, pineapples, more subdued. Fresh acidity, rounded, almost creamy texture, lovely balance. Refined and refreshing, but lacks the immense length of the last bottle. 95

Frost in April 2008 didn't do any damage at d'Yquem - the explanation is that d'Yquem is situated at the hill-top and has a lake close to vineyard, which apparantly prevented frost to enter. Tasted twice - last time in April 2012. Consistent notes. It was deep and intense on the nose with pear and apricots, velvety, very sophisticated, with excellent structure and greath length. Finished with acacia honey. Awesome stuff.
