The 1957 Château d'Yquem stands as a remarkable effort to the estate's rigorous standards during a difficult, rain-troubled growing season marked by frequent summer downpours and an unusually high proportion of Sauvignon Blanc in the blend. Despite the unfavorable weather, dedicated and highly selective harvesting throughout October salvaged enough well-shaped, concentrated botrytis to craft a surprisingly refined, light-footed, and feminine m...

The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

When the Bordeaux region wines were classified in 1855, only Château d’Yquem received a classification of its own, Premier Grand Cru Classé, higher than anybody else. Even if the estate could use that classification on its labels, it does not. Today, the estate produces the best wine in its area, in the opinion of some experts the best in Bordeaux. Its location on the highest spot in Sauternes has created a unique micro-climate that varies a l...

Vintage 1957

Bordeaux: The weather conditions in Bordeaux during the 1957 growing season were mixed. The year began with a cold winter and a late spring, which delayed budbreak and flowering. While the summer months were relatively warm and dry, they were also marked by periods of rainfall. This inconsistent weather had a significant impact on grape ripening and overall quality.

Written Notes

Orange brown. It was full-bodied, harmonious and well-proportioned wine with marzipan, sweet almonds on the nose and palate and long aftertaste. Kept its shape very nicely and will continue like that in the next 10 years.
