The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Vintage 1918

Very fine weather generally throughout the whole year, including the harvest. However, it would appear that the ripeness did not reach optimal levels. Written Notes

Amber colour with slightly copper coloured hue. Excellent nose with candied orange peel, hints of tangerine zest, caramel and fine spices. An aroma like a flower shop in winter time. On the palate excellent depth and length, hints of mint, well-balanced with orange peel and tangerine zest. A great wine, still with potential.

Bright and clear amber colour. Astonishingly fresh and focused nose with purity and superb concentration. Full-bodied and lusciously sweet wine that charms with the unique balance and refined honey and apricot flavours. – JL 100p. (Aug 2023)

The wine was a Belgian bottling by VanderMeulen. Unfortunately, it had passed away, maybe due to bad storage. Almost 7,5 years later I tasted this wine in September 2012, a negociant bottling, which was stupendous and still alive. Very dark brown, full of toffee aroma, crème brulée, fine acidity, excellent structure, long and honeyed finish. Excellent and well-preserved wine, impressive experience rated 93p.
