The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

"A year that had several major advantages in terms of weather: temperatures 2°C above average between March and September and a slight water stress. Grapes harvested during the first pass confirmed having lived up to their potential. Unfortunately, however, relentless rain in October ruined nearly 80% of the crop, and production was limited. A vintage reminiscent of 1982."

Vintage 2000

BORDEAUX 2000 – A  DREAM VINTAGE

Weather conditions / Vintage 2000 has from the very start been proclaimed as one of the best vintages of modern times. In spring 2003, I've had many opportunities to find out, if we really have a true dream vintage in our hands.

During harvest 2000, while doing "personal inspection" in the vineyards, I noticed that something extraordinary big was on its way. Grapes looked extremely healthy.

Written Notes

A rich Yquem, with coffee, dried orange skin, and dried apples. Full and sweet, with a round body and very yummy. A touch of bitterness on the palate. 128 grams of RS.

Golden, tropical, some botrytis, clean if not too complex. Fresh, on the verge of lively, should be more concentrated, fairly long. 91

0.75 bottle.Light golden colour, bright for the age, nose of marmelade, peach, apricots, light to medium body, not much acidity left,on the palate baked apple, peach, honey.Medium finish, light apricot pit taste.Quite well for not an overwhelming year in Sauternes.

Only 20% of the harvest (September pickings) became Grand Vin, because of downpour from mid-October, which literally washed the remaining grapes away. It was also the last vintage with full involvement of Count Alexandre de Lur Saluces. Golden. Well-defined botrytis, mango, apple and acacia honey. This was a delicate version of d'Yquem with great finesse and elegance, concentrated with many nuances, sweetness and long aftertaste. Quite approachable right now, but can easily be enjoyed in the next 12-20 years.
