The Story

Origin: A rocky site at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger that Anselme Selosse acquired in 2002

Exposure: South and southeast facing steep site with fractured chalk bedrock.

Selosse's NV Extra-Brut Les Carelles, from a parcel in Mesnil, brings together some of the exuberance of the Chemin de Chalons and the tension of the Chantereines. The Carelles is a wine of contrasts. At times rich and intense, while at others remarkably light on its feet, the Carelles is constantly changing in the glass. Even with all of the nuances what stands out most is the wine's sublime, pure texture. Hints of graphite and mineral-inflected notes linger on the finish. The Carelles is a nectar for the Gods and Godesses. I can't think of too many other Champagnes I deeply crave this much right now. Readers who can find the current release should not hesitate. This is magnificent juice. The Carelles is composed of vintages 2006, 2005, 2004 and 2003. This bottle was disgorged on April 10, 2013. Dosage is 2 grams/liter. – Antonio Galloni 98p

Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. This led to some uneven ripening and differing levels of maturity owing to the second generation of grapes that appeared after the frost damage and thus ripened later. The summer was generally dry and warm, which produced big, powerful, concentrated and full-flavoured wines.

Written Notes

After some strenuous exercise, I found myself cooling down by the pool with some killer Champagnes, although the first was slightly affected. Operation Starfish found the 1990 Jacques Selosse ‘jumbled,’ and he was right. I only know because I had a near-perfect bottle just recently. I’ll get to that later, but per this bottle on this occasion (94A).
