The Story

Origin: A parcel located in Ambonnay that Anselme Selosse acquired in 2001.

Soil: Clay-rich soil generates rich and powerful wines

The NV Le Bout du Clos is breathtaking. The essence of Ambonnay emerges from the glass in layers of mineral-infused red fruit, crushed rocks and white flowers. The Bout du Clos is all about precision, detail and nuance. It is an extraordinary wine in every way. Crushed rocks, graphite and smoke inform the clean, bracing finish. This is a dazzling effort from Anselme and Corinne Selosse. Disgorged February 24th, 2011. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. – Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 97p

Vintage 2004

A great example of how large yields do not necessarily mean poor quality in Champagne. As a reaction to the previous year's low yields, the vines produced one of the largest crops on record. The growing season proceeded without major difficulties but the bumper crop called for bud thinning. August brought about cooler weather and some rains, increasing the risk of rot. The massive crop, averaging 13,990 kg/ha, was picked from September 18th onwards. The quality was a pleasant surprise; vibrant wines with appropriate intensity, refined charm and refreshing lightness. This vintage impresses me more and more, and I feel tempted to give it the full five stars. It comes with a rare balance of freshness, lightness, yet fine aromatic intensity. Post-release, this vintage has proven to be slow to age, and elegant wines are likely to keep on ageing gracefully. Dom Pérignon and Louis Roederer Cristal both excelled.

Written Notes

The first two wines were Champagnes, and everything was served blind. The Keymaster doesn’t just let everyone in that easily, you know. The first bubbly had a great, fresh nose of salted caramel, minerals, wheat and seltzer. The palate was initially a laser light show with its long, zippy personality, and it was tasty with great flavors of apple and minerals. This was a 100% Pinot Noir from d’Ambonnay, the first vintage of 2004 Jacques Selosses Le Bout du Clos. Man, I hope I got that right. It was so delicious for such a young Champagne; then again, that’s that signature Selosses…always so damn delicious. Apparently only 600-900 bottles were made of this insanely rare bottling, but I am just going by my notes and what I was told, for the record. It fattened and mellowed (95).
