The Story

Whether by design or by pure chance, there are in the world exceptional places. Cheval Blanc is one of these. Combining a unique soil with a symbiotic mix of grape varieties, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Cheval Blanc produces a wine, which has the rare quality of being good at any age. It is without doubt one of the most consistent wines in the world. Cheval Blanc's unique identity is due to its varied soils, early-ripening microclimate, the percentage of Cabernet Franc in the vineyard, and the close proximity of the finest wines of Pomerol.

Château Cheval Blanc has the rare ability to be good at whatever age. It is enjoyable young or as much as a century old in certain vintages. However, a great wine only reveals its full potential and all its subtle nuances after several years in bottle. It takes time to show its true colours and before reaching its peak. Every vintage of Cheval Blanc is made according to the traditional philosophy that great wine needs to age.
It should nevertheless be said that wines with ageing potential go through several periods, and that each one has its own type of attractiveness. This is all part of Château Cheval Blanc's fascinating complexity. Three different bottles of Cheval Blanc from the same vintage drunk at five, twenty, and forty years of age will each show a different facet of the same wine, variations on the same lovely theme. A bottle of fine wine meant to age is like a library of flavours that develop throughout its existence.
Wine is a "cultural" beverage that is very much alive and develops countless nuances over time. That is why this long waiting period needs to be respected. It is crucial to the wine's evolution, so that it can deliver its very best.

Wine Information

Vintage 2005/ A record year for lack of rain and moderate temperatures, promising an exceptional vintage.
Total rainfall from January to the end of September came to 343 mm, against an average of 572 mm. The vine cycle was therefore all the quicker, making 2005 a very early year. Flowering and veraison were very rapid and even. Harvesting was from 12th to 27th September in excellent conditions. The vines resisted by adapting
remarkably to the lack of water.

The two previous vintages had also been dry ones, causing adjustments of the root
systems. The dry summer brought growth to an early halt, and also limited growth of
the grapes, which were particularly small and concentrated. The composition of the
ripe grapes was exceptional.
Potential alcohol content reached unprecedented levels and there was a good acidity level induced by a cool month of September.
The fruity character of the wine is very much in a ripe, rather than a crystallised register.
Thanks to all these factors, the wines cope easily with their high alcohol content and remain fresh, partly thanks to extreme vigilance during the winemaking process.

Vintage 2005

Bordeaux Vintage Report 2005 is a truly fantastic vintage with great quality across the board on both the Left and Right Banks.

The 2005 vintage became the most expected since 2000. The en primeur market was heated, and prices skyrocketed. The cold winter delayed the bud break before the hot ans dunny spring broke up. Even vegetative growth and flowering gave a perfect start to the vintage. The summer turned out to be one of the driest ever which was avoiding disaster since the weather remained reasonably warm not excessively hot as in 2003. The soil is again becoming a decisive quality factor. Gravelly areas, such as Graves, were worst affected once more. In other words, top wines are to be expected.

For short term perspective, in the next couple of years, an excellent amount of mature red Bordeaux wines will be available in the market. The vintages 2004, 2002, 1999, 1994, 1992 and 1988 offer a wide selection of enjoyable wines to be consumed immediately or at most to be stored for a short period.

As investments, the best vintages from the past 35 years are 2003, 1996, 1989, 1986 and 1982. The most certain long-term investments are Latour, La Mission Haut-Brion, Haut-Brion, Le Pin and Pétrus.

In the last 35 years, Bordeaux has undergone a substantial change in winemaking. Modern equipment and developing know-how have guaranteed more even quality. It seems that the next challenge will be handling the extreme climates including slowly global warming, which has already given hints of its effects also in Bordeaux. It is impossible to say how the Bordeaux wines will change in the next 35 years. We can only hope that their most characteristic feature, elegant aristocratic nature highlighted by unique terroir, will never fade away.

Written Notes

This has a fabulous nose of black fruit, dark chocolate, nuts, and spices. It’s pretty much perfect. Full bodied, with beautiful fine tannins reminiscent of cashmere. A long, long finish rounds out this beautiful wine. Please don’t touch this until 2020. Find the wine!

An exceptionally deep, dark and intense red. Rich and ripe aromas of black fruits are revealed in the bouquet.Extraordinarily rich on the palate, this wine displays intense, concentrated black-fruit flavours and an elegant tannic texture imparted by the cabernet franc. The finish is long and generous – a sign of an outstanding year.

The 2005 vintage is widely regarded as outstanding in the Bordeaux region. Featuring the driest weather on record, 2005 produced superb merlot and cabernet franc grapes with unprecedented levels of sugar concentration – without becoming over-ripe. This blend, 49% cabernet franc and 51% merlot, was aged in new oak barrels for 16-17 months.
