The Story

The Montrachet family consists of grand five Grands Crus grown in the two villages of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet. These two share the Montrachet and Bâtard-Montrachet appellations. Chevalier and Bienvenues belong to Puligny, Criots belongs to Chassagne. These Grands Crus are the most southerly of the Côte-d'Or, and lie between Meursault in the north and Santenay in the south. Their origins go back to the Middle Ages - the work...

Burgundy 2018: An ideal vintage

The 2018 vintage was met with a unanimous show of satisfaction from the north of Bourgogne to the south. The exceptional weather, especially during the harvest period, resulted in grapes with perfect health, allowing picking to extend over almost a whole month. Initial tastings ahead of the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction have given an early idea that 2018 will be a truly great year.

Written Notes

The Romanée-Conti Montrachet 2018 reveals itself in the glass with a radiant and vivid golden hue that shimmers like the first light of dawn. Its brilliance hints at the wine's purity and finesse.

Upon the initial swirl, an exquisite bouquet unfolds with captivating complexity. A delicate bouquet of white flowers, including acacia blossoms and honeysuckle, wafts from the glass, intertwining with the subtle aroma of fresh apricots and ripe peaches. Beneath these floral and fruit notes lies a distinct minerality, reminiscent of crushed limestone, offering a tantalizing glimpse of the vineyard's terroir.

The palate is nothing short of extraordinary, displaying a harmonious interplay of flavors and an impeccably balanced structure. Layers of flavors emerge one after another, beginning with the luscious essence of citrus, Meyer lemon zest, and juicy white grapefruit. These citrus notes gracefully transition into the opulence of ripe pear and baked apple, providing a rich, textural depth to the wine.

The acidity is impeccably integrated, offering a refreshing vibrancy that carries the wine across the palate with elegance and precision. Hints of toasted hazelnuts and a subtle kiss of vanilla from perfectly integrated oak barrels add a refined complexity to the mid-palate.

The finish is enduring, leaving an indelible impression. It lingers gracefully, with a gentle, saline minerality that reverberates and revitalizes the senses. The persistence of flavors is a testament to the wine's impeccable structure and the exceptional craftsmanship of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

The Romanée-Conti Montrachet 2018 is an opulent masterpiece, showcasing the epitome of Chardonnay from one of the world's most esteemed terroirs. Its purity, depth, and complexity make it a true masterpiece of Burgundian winemaking. This wine is in its prime now, but it also possesses the potential for graceful aging over the coming decades. It is a rare and profound expression of Montrachet Grand Cru that will leave a lasting memory for those fortunate enough to savor its elegance.

Suggested Food Pairing:
Enjoy this exceptional wine with equally exquisite cuisine. Pair it with dishes like seared scallops in a beurre blanc sauce, butter-poached lobster, or a delicate truffle risotto. It also complements a selection of artisanal cheeses, particularly those with creamy textures and subtle earthiness.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru is a very pretty, understated Montrachet that reminds me of years like 2001 and 2004, where the wine is built on elegance and finesse more than on opulence. Orchard fruit, tangerine peel, flowers, chamomile and tropical accents all grace this exquisite, utterly beguiling Montrachet. Today, the 2017 is quite reticent, but it is a noble reticence. I can’t wait to see how it ages. Even in the early going, the 2017 is exceptional. It is one of my favorite Montrachets of the decade. Harvest took place on September 7.
