96 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Some bricking with a ruby core. A simply brilliant nose with a superb breadth of spice, earth, leather and smoky game nuances leads to still vibrant and youthful, very ripe flavors that possess simply knockout complexity and still plenty of vigor on the incredibly long finish. This is really quite something and while it is as good as it will ever be, the '64 RC is unbelievably good for such young vines a...

Written Notes

Holy shit, a 1964 DRC Romanee Conti. When it rains, it pours, but this was a downright typhoon already! The ’64 was rich and saucy, so textured and seductive. Bohr observed ‘that tomato skin thing’ that old DRC’s can have, and it also had a rich bouillon quality. Lush and still strong, this was again a great bottle from an ‘up and down’ vintage that definitely took me to the ‘up’ side. This was an intense and deep experience

1964 was the unsurpassed vintage of the decade in Vosne-Romanée. The spring was cool and summer almost perfect with very hot July. Few refreshing showers in September. Most of the red wines delivered a promise of a long and successful life. The Romanée-Conti is one of the best example of those wines, who delivered that promise fully. Good looking bottle. Level was 4 cm. Decanted one hour. Fine mature colour. Intense and concentrated nose with hints of mint and pure Pinot aromas. Well-balanced, fresh and very classy wine. A genuine, solid and sensual wine with sweet and elegant finish.

I was expecting a little more from this legendary bottle. It started off a little funky and strange, but then it came around and smelled like sex. Full and silky textured with dark berries, toffee and caramel on the palate. It opened wonderfully with time.
