Penfolds G3: Making Grange, Already One Of The World’s Greatest Wines, Even Better!

Penfolds, unquestionably Australia’s leading global wine brand, makes one of the world’s finest and most collectible wines: Grange. Predominantly Shiraz – even sometimes 100 percent – from a range of regions in South Australia, it is on every wine lover’s bucket list.

And Grange is a wine with a history that most fantasy novelists could not conjure.

The Story

Penfolds has released a special wine blended from three Grange vintages spanning seven years – 2008, 2012 and 2014 (a vintage to be globally released in 2018). Aptly named Penfolds g3, this unique blend expertly entwines the three Grange vintages to create a completely unique Penfolds expression. A first for Penfolds.

With only 1200 bottles available on this Planet, this is a very special and rare release. Penfolds g3 represents the tr...

Written Notes

The new, not quite one-off release from Penfold's, which combines three vintages of Grange – this one, the 2014, 2012 and 2008. Only 1,200 bottles made and at three grand a pop. There may be future releases but little was being given away. It is a rich and complex wine, with noticeable Grange DNA and it should age brilliantly. It does show the Grange style, but does not quite have the same impact a great Grange does. As a curiosity, top marks. As a wine, certainly very impressive but perhaps not in the class of an individual Grange.

Score: 93/100

Best drinking: at this price, one wonders if anyone will ever open a bottle, but any time in the next few decades will work, if you are so inclined.

This is a wine that you just want to keep smelling with a kalidescope of aromas. Floral bouquet such as violets and roses with a blackberry and blueberry character underneath. But the fruit is secondary. It's all about the rest of it. Minerals. Slate. Flint. Soya. Full body, extremely fine tannins with great length and depth. The essence of Penfolds. The finesse and texture is surreal. Balanced. It's a magical wine. The perfect drink. And a blend of vintages - 2008, 2012 and 2014.. This has 2% cabernet and the rest shiraz. 1200 bottles made.

A blend of 2008, 2012 and 2014 Granges. Milder than the 2013 Grange tasted immediately beforehand, maybe with less obvious acidity. Very voluptuous with just one whiff. Creamy texture. Racy and sublimely confident. Really rather majestic. Coming along nicely and sublimely. Very much the essence of South Australian Shiraz. Quite a production!
