Vintage 2017

AUSTRALIA VINTAGE REPORT: The 2017 winegrape crush is estimated to be 1.93 million tonnes, based on responses received by the Wine Sector Survey 2017. This crush is 5 per cent higher than the 2016 final crush figure of 1.84 million tonnes (Department of Agriculture and Water Resources – Levies recorded figure). Written Notes

At first this was the offcuts from Yattarna. Above average winter and spring rainfall, mild and mostly dry summer with lots of cool nights in spring and autumn which slowed ripening. A challenging vintage with good acidity. Eight months in 40% new French oak. Used to be entirely wild ferment. They’ve dialled back on struck match but some is there. TA 7 g/l, pH 3.2. 
100% malo is quite obvious. Richer than 311 with a significant oak and malo element. Quite a bit of grip on the end. Grapefruit bitterness on the end.

Pale colour. Highly evocative wine with intense grapefruit, white apricot flinty aromas with grilled nut complexity. Generous and creamy with grapefruit, apricot, white peach stone fruit flavours, light marzipan, flinty notes and underlying savoury oak complexity; all intertwined with fine lacy textures, crisp acidity and superb mineral length. This is absolutely at the cutting edge of Australian Chardonnay. An exquisite balance of fruit definition, texture and mouthwatering freshness. Delicious wine. Move over Puligny. 98 points - 12.5% alcohol – Drink Now – 2030.

Trophies for Best Chardonnay, Best White, Best Wine of Show, Best State Show Wine, gold medal, 96 points. A true winemakers wine, but with flavour. Very finely detailed and manicured. Definitely appealing.

I didn’t spot any obvious reductive character this year, indeed it’s quite delicate on the nose, the palate builds with again very refined flavours, though the oak gives a vanilla etching too. If anything it’s probably too lean, though the acidity feels natural and not harsh. I’d like to see this with more bottle age as it might well put on weight. Super fine and precise wine though and has drinkability. 18.5/20, 94/100+
