The Story

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s Grange’ or ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers.

Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds skill in judiciously ...

Written Notes

Is this Australia's most beloved wine? What serious cellar doesn't have at least a few bottles, though it is not the value it once was. Even with the price hikes, Gago says that they “cannot make enough 389 to satisfy any market on the planet”. It is always Cabernet dominant. This vintage, it is a near thing – 51/49 – but in some years, the Cabernet component is as high as 80%. American oak only – hogsheads – with 40% new. Very much the multi-regional blend with fruit from the Barossa, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, Robe, McLaren Vale, Padthaway and the Adelaide Hills. First made in 1960. This was black and purple in colour. Full of delicious black fruits, spice, smoked meats, soy, leather and more. It moves into coffee beans, chocolate and licorice. There is serious concentration but it is also a plush wine throughout. Nicely balanced, though there are considerable tannins evident. Still tight, very young, intense, very long. Lovely wine and a great future.

Penfolds Bin 389 2010 / Deep crimson purple. Impressively powerful with intense blueberry, blackberry, liquorice aromas and dark chocolate, ginger, marzipan, oak nuances. A substantial palate with remarkable richness and concentration. Saturated blackberry essence, juicy fruit, liquorice, aniseed flavours are balanced by abundant ripe generous tannins and plenty of vanilla, malt, ginger oak notes. It finishes chocolatey firm with tremendous drive and depth of flavour. All the elements are in harmony. It’s delicious but ultimately this wine needs time to reveal its true potential. Keep.

Deep ruby. Spicy, rich, dark fruits, intense nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fresh and lively, spicey, fruity, rich, detailed and intense. 91
