Record price for legendary Penfolds Bin 60A

A record price was set for a single bottle of the legendary Penfolds 1962 Bin 60A Coonawarra Cabernet & Kalimna Shiraz at the recent live Barossa Wine Auction. It brought AUD $21,552 (including buyer’s premium) – three times the estimate. This was also substantially above the price for a bottle of the same wine at the last Barossa auction in 2017, which was AUD $14,562.

The Story

1962 Penfolds Bin 60A Kalimna Shiraz, Coonawarra Cabernet is a legendary Australian wine. In a world where egos readily clashed, it unified wine critics and show judges. 1962 Bin 60A is Penfolds most successful show wine winning 19 trophies and 33 gold medal.  It was a profound oenological, physical and philosophical achievement for its time. Still fresh and alive, it is a lasting model of Max Schubert’s groundbreaking winemaking practices and...

Wine Information

Bin 60A Story / Joy Lake and I used to taste the first vintages of Grange with Max Schubert and Geoffrey Penfold Hyland in the lab at Penfold’s central office ay Magill.  I can’t clearly recall how the connection began, but it had something to do with the fact that I had started writing about wine, and they liked the independence of an articulate surgeon giving opinions on controversial wines they were making. There is no truth on the fable t...

Vintage 1962

Australia / A year of below average precipitation due to a dry winter. However, summer rains in January and again in March made this an exceptional year producing exceptional red wines, despite the poor fruit set for Shiraz.

In 1962 there were 7,174 hectares of vines in the Barossa and 31,774 tonnes of wine grapes were crushed in that vintage.

The introduction of the first Barossa Spaetlese Riesling by Orlando in 1956 had ushered in a ne...

Written Notes

For me, the best wine at Pekka’s extraordinary tasting in Helsinki in August (and may I be allowed a smidge of national pride that an Aussie wine has topped the comp two years in a row)!

But then, this is a truly famous and fabulous wine. There was a time when every bottle seemed to be heaven-sent but in the last decade, the great ones have been not quite so apparent so often. Age? Corks? Luck?

Fortunately, they simply don’t come better than the bottle we had this year. Glorious (the only thing better would be a Redskins Superbowl win followed by a Springsteen concert – at least we have Bruce touring in 2017 because fat chance of a Skins win in the foreseeable future). Black cherries, aniseed, mint, chocolate. This was in brilliant condition. Supple texture. Just stunning. The aftertaste lingered for minutes. How can this possibly be so alive? As good as I have ever seen it. I'm not sure wine can get much better.

Ruby, garnet rim. Figs, dates, minerals, nuanced, floral, tobacco, elegant nose, detailed. Minty with, layered and Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, detailed, minerals, elegant, red fruits, detailed, dates, figs, tobacco, mint, fine tuned and almost filigree. Long and detailed. 100

Medium deep brick red. Fully mature wine with infinite complexity and richness. Ethereal praline, mocha, apricot, espresso, herb garden, polished leather aromas. Supple and fine grained with seductive espresso, herb garden, dried fruits, apricot flavours, fine, loose knit tannins and lovely clear, gentle acidity. Finishes minerally and long with plenty of sous bois, earthy, leather notes. The most famous Australian wine of the 1960s, with an astonishing wine show record and subsequently a contemporary legend. Still holding up well, with enough substance and balance to last another 20 years

This wine has one of the most alluring aromas that range from dried rose petals to sweet dried berries and jasmine tea. The palate is equally seductive offering range of sweet spices and silky tannins. A beautifully poised, elegant red that is among the most profound wines with amazing finesse that I have tasted from Australia. The flavours are haunting and will be etched in my memory.

onated by Peter Gago. Described by Andrew Caillard as 'Australia's greatest wine every made', though there is obviously some debate about that, particularly in relation to Grange. It was Penfolds' most successful show wine ever, winning 19 trophies and 33 gold medals. Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra and Shiraz from Kalimna. tle smoky, incredibly youthful. Perfumed. Rich and velvety and still has great power and length and depth. Smooth fine tannins and an amazing level of sweet fresh red fruit still there. Very long. Unbelievably good and lived up to all the hype. (JH)

Penfolds Bin 60A 1962 / 100 points. Thick, opaque, ruby colour with enormous viscosity. Big nose! Powerful, spicy and surprisingly vegetal with nutmeg and Asian spicy aromas. The full-bodied palate surprises again with moderately high acidity. Big chewy tannins are forming solid backbone to intense dark fruitiness. Spices, licorice, nutmeg and cacao with bitter chocolate flavours are all well pronounced in mineral finish. Big and sensitive wine with no flabbiness thanks to delightful minerality.

Inside Information

An utterly superb wine, a glorious freak of nature and man; ethereal and beguiling, yet the palate is virtually endless, with a peacock's tale stolen from the very greatest of Burgundies; the fruit sweetness perfectly offset by acidity… The 100 point dry red? Why not! This is possibly the greatest red wine tasted in our times in Australia. Wine Companion (2008).
