The Story

Penfolds Quantum Bin 98 is the continuation of a twenty-year endeavor from when Australian vine cuttings were planted in Californian soil. A Wine of the World that encapsulates a bold blending alliance, Quantum reveals a wine that shows wisdom, crafted with conviction but also embedded in the “quality-first” philosophy that underpins Penfolds flagships. The wine serves as the most powerful expression of our blending style and leads the charge ...

Wine Information

A blue-berried wash and glistening film covers the palate with conviction. Viscous/marbled texture combines with suppleness and acid succulence. Respectful acidity tightens the palate, clenching/compressing around a core of graphite and hazelnut: Graphite confirms varietal and identity. Hazelnut confirms oak maturation. A plush texture which cushions the palate. Exotic intrigue. Sweetness that dials up over time with air. All boxes ticked.

Vintage 2018

Very promising quality with the most bullish commentators declaring 2018 great in every region and for every variety. The more circumspect view is that early frosts reduced yields, but good, consistent weather throughout the second half of the growing season did indeed result in great potential.

A complex dark-berried spectrum commands immediate focus and with further attention blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry can be teased out.

'Wine of USA 87%, Wine of Australia 13%' says the label, from Napa Valley (Cabernet Sauvignon) and South Australia (Shiraz) respectively. Aged 16 months in American oak (80% new) and French oak (20% new).
Like their Bin 600, this has the Penfolds imprint in full effect, with opulent oak spice. However, the fruit here is of an altogether higher calibre, giving far greater balance and depth. There's even a touch of gruffness to the tannin, which lends it a bit more personality than its more manicured stablemates. Loads of black-olive complexity on the long, pleasurable finish. Is this the Californian Grange? Well, it's not majority Shiraz, but the quality is comparable. (RH)

A1 shiraz from Australia, sent over as a complete wine in custom metre x metre cubed tanks and blended with the American component prior to maturation. If you’ve ever had new release Grange, you will know exactly what the texture of this wine is like. Formidably tannic yet plush and opulent, it is a commanding and authoritative wine both on the nose and palate, all of it saturated in streamlined uber high quality. Matured in A.P. John American oak barrels (used for Grange), which are made in Australia, and shipped over to the USA as completed barrels. This is dense, salty, savoury and endlessly layered. Very, very long and absolutely no question as to how long it will gracefulle evolve in the cellar: decades.

Ruby. Cassis, vanilla, spices, rich, deep, some floral high notes, deep and rich nose, intense. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, dark fruits, anise, blackberries and spices, rich, intense and layered, quite a bit of wood, dense and long. 96

What sticks with you about this global blend of Napa and Southern Australian wine is the intense and transparent purple and blue fruit. Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with some stones and flowers, such as violets. It’s a very layered and intense wine with very refined, creamy and chewy tannins. Full and very impressive. Very Penfolds. Mouth-filling texture. It’s made mostly from Napa grapes and predominantly from Oakville and Diamond Mountain. About one-fifth is from South Australia. Aged in 80% new American oak and 20% new French. Try after 2026.

Deep colour. Beautiful dark chocolate, blackberry aromas with roasted chestnut, apricot, chinotto, truffle notes. Densely concentrated wine with saturated dark chocolate, blackberry, boysenberry liquorice flavours, complex apricot/stone fruit notes, superbly integrated roasted chestnut/ hazelnut/malty oak, lovely mid-palate richness and fine looseknit supple gravelly tannins. Finishes firm and tight with a beautiful inky plume. A cross-Pacific, partially barrel-fermented blend based on rigorous classification and the best parcels of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (87%) and South Australian Shiraz (13%). Elemental, multi-layered and brash, yet unmistakably Penfolds in style with superb fruit definition, oak integration and structure. Will take some years to unfold, but the wait will be worthwhile.
