“Similar in weight to the 2002 Grange vintage – a complete package, ticking all boxes… the ‘refinements’ continue. Not as ‘Barossa-ish’ as the 2008 vintage – with McLaren Vale and Clare staking their claim on this 2009 wine’s ID. Very drinkable… plan ahead and cellar some in magnum for longer-term rationing.”

(98% shiraz and 2% cabernet sauvignon): Inky ruby. Intense spice- and mineral-accented aromas of cherry pit, blackberry and plum, with smoke and floral qualities adding complexity. Taut and linear on entry, then fleshier in the mid-palate, offering zesty dark fruit and violet pastille flavors and hints of licorice and vanilla. Finishes smoky, spicy and very long, with youthfully firm, building tannins adding grip. In a relatively taut, wound-up style for this wine; by all means give it some age.

Tasted blind. Youthful crimson. Extremely spearminty! Sweet start. I assume this is Australian. Muscular. Fairly dry tannins on the end but masses of clean dry fruit on the way there. Big and bold on the finish. Glossy and exuberant.

At once Grange – formic, assertive, powerful… with overt barrel-ferment markers. Bright, and noticeably fragrant/perfumed at this time of tasting, in its fifth year immediately prior to release.Racy red fruits clasp onto red liquorice, aniseed aromatics. Red meats (corned beef?) with pepper and spice, rumtopf.Patiently, panforte/mascarpone/malt/dried fig aromatics appear in a second wave. No hurry – the curtain is up, the stage reserved for decades! Captivating/tempting/alluring – yet another subtle variation on the theme/expression of this thing called Grange. Voluptuous and generous, yet poised and harmonious. Assured, and not attempting to overstate its weight/extract/presence. Immediately apparent flavours of chocolate, mocha, cola and juicy plum entwine and converge toward the panforte impression aromatically sensed earlier. Tight and defined, with excellent grip – savoury/tannic. These tannins are both integrated and balanced, colluding with 100% new oak that is all but completely absorbed.
