The Story

Whether by design or by pure chance, there are in the world exceptional places. Cheval Blanc is one of these. Combining a unique soil with a symbiotic mix of grape varieties, Cabernet Franc and Merlot, Cheval Blanc produces a wine, which has the rare quality of being good at any age. It is without doubt one of the most consistent wines in the world. Cheval Blanc's unique identity is due to its varied soils, early-ripening microclimate, the percentage of Cabernet Franc in the vineyard, and the close proximity of the finest wines of Pomerol.

Château Cheval Blanc has the rare ability to be good at whatever age. It is enjoyable young or as much as a century old in certain vintages. However, a great wine only reveals its full potential and all its subtle nuances after several years in bottle. It takes time to show its true colours and before reaching its peak. Every vintage of Cheval Blanc is made according to the traditional philosophy that great wine needs to age.
It should nevertheless be said that wines with ageing potential go through several periods, and that each one has its own type of attractiveness. This is all part of Château Cheval Blanc's fascinating complexity. Three different bottles of Cheval Blanc from the same vintage drunk at five, twenty, and forty years of age will each show a different facet of the same wine, variations on the same lovely theme. A bottle of fine wine meant to age is like a library of flavours that develop throughout its existence.
Wine is a "cultural" beverage that is very much alive and develops countless nuances over time. That is why this long waiting period needs to be respected. It is crucial to the wine's evolution, so that it can deliver its very best.

Wine Information

The 1953 to become the first top vintage of the 1950s. The year ended up to be an excellent one, even though the heavy rains of September threatened to destroy a good year. The hot, dry summer was crowned by a perfect August. The mercury rose above 30°C on more than half of the days in August. Fortunately, the rains that came in mid-September made way for ideal harvest conditions at the beginning of October. The finest wines of this vintage are united by their elegance, delicacy and temperance. They should ideally be decanted for two hours before drinking. The vintage received praise particularly in Médoc, which produced the best wines of the entire vintage. One of the most highly renowned of these is the Château Lafite-Rothschild. Many consider it to be best Lafite-Rothschild of the entire 20th century. Although Graves and Sauternes also produced some top wines, Pomerol and Saint-Émilion today offer so many outstanding creatures, with the crème de la crème being the Cheval Blanc and Lafleur.

Written Notes

Cheval 1953/ Bottle was in excellent condition. Level was by the neck. Decanted only half an hour before tasting, which was definitely too short – it needs to breath at least two to three hours before drinking. A first-class, bright, even youthful color. Round and rich, aged bouquet. Surprisingly modest and simple wine at first, although it was very elegant and stylish right from the start. But after breathing three long hours in a glass, it became like another wine. Rich and full with lots of fruit and energy. A well balanced, convincingly sophisticated and grandiose wine. Be patient and you will be rewarded. Tasted many times from different bottling with almost similar notes.

Amazingly, this wine is still dark crimson, even if the rim is quite mature. The nose was wonderfully pure and jewelly in texture – so perfumed and refined!  This wine after all was made only six years after the miraculous 1947. This was a wine with a really refreshing line to it and is not at all heavy. Lovely life to it still.

Tasted twice - last time in November 2019. Consistent notes. Irresistible wine with great degree of sweetness, sophisticated stuff and extraordinary richness. Can keep for many years yet. This was in June 1992. 27 years later, this wine still was something extraordinary. Seamlessly structured, rich and strikingly sophisticated with stunning complexity and finish. Can probably keep forever!!

In neck fill. Earthy, anise, touch of floral notes comes and goes, lots of tobacco and coffee. Fresh acidity, drying tannins, leaner palate, minerals and tobacco finish, long if drying.
