Champagne Henriot announces the appointment of its new Wine Maker,  Alice Tétienne

Champagne Henriot is very pleased to welcome Alice Tétienne as its new Wine Maker, starting from April 1st, 2020.

Alice Tétienne joined Champagne Krug in 2015. An oenologist, she is responsible for vineyard relations and is part of the tasting committee.

Born in the Champagne region and driven by a desire to acquire a global understanding of the vineyard, Alice Tétienne started studying the wine growing field in order to understand the raw material and the influence of the terroir on the vegetative expression and the quality of the grapes. She holds a Degree in Vine Sciences and a Master in Vine and Terroir. During her studies, she integrated different wine-growing estates and research centers, in order to adopt a vision that is both field-based but also scientific.

In order to be able to enhance the value and develop the image of Champagne, Alice Tétienne then explored the communication sector by obtaining a Master in Wines and Champagne and immersed herself in the Marketing department of the Laurent Perrier Champagne.

She then concentrated on oenology, obtaining the National Diploma of Oenologist, being awarded with the prize for oenological innovation and the prize for the dissertation.

She joined Centre Vinicole Nicolas Feuillatte in 2014 as an oenologist, supporting members on grape pressing and winemaking, then Maison Krug in November 2015.

Alice Tétienne thus acquired a global and transverse knowledge of the elaboration of Champagne wines, starting from the raw material, its selection and its understanding, up to the elaboration of the blends. She has also developed a strong sense of interpersonal skills and a solid knowledge of the Champagne vineyards.

Gilles de Larouzière, President of Champagne Henriot, comments: "I would first like to thank Laurent Fresnet, who for 13 years has greatly contributed to enhancing the precision and elegance of our Champagnes. We are very happy that Alice Tétienne is joining us. A brilliant and talented woman, she will contribute to grow the influence and the valorization of Champagne Henriot, which began in 2018, thanks to her culture of excellence and her strong spirit of collaboration with our partners in the vineyard. By appointing her, I of course also have a special thought for another talented woman, my relative Apolline Henriot, who in 1808 founded our House ".

Historia

It was in 1808, under Apolline Henriot, that Champagne Henriot was officially founded. She was the niece of the very famous Abbé Godinot, an erudite man who contributed to improvements in viticulture and the making of the Champagne wine. Apolline, an enterprising woman of great character, sold her wines both in France and abroad.

The champagne wines became a huge success with royalty and it was only natural that Champagne Henriot became the favorite firstly at the Dutch court, then in Austria and Hungary with the Hapsburgs. She passed on her savoir-faire to her grandson, Ernest : a family tradition was born.

In 1875, Ernest enlarged the company's holdings and developped the House. At the end of the 19th century, the phylloxera crisis reached the Champagne vineyards but Emile Marguet, (father in law to Paul Henriot) was one of the first to reconstitute his vineyards with grafted stock.

From then on and from generation to generation, the House of Henriot has devoted all its talent to creating the most superb wines from grapes carefully selected from the great "terroirs" on the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Blancs.

Since 1808, Champagne Henriot, one of the last independent and family-owned houses in Champagne, has pursued a tradition of excellence – a fragile balance between delicacy, intensity, and purity. For seven generations, the family has selected only the very best vineyards, concentrated on the purity of chardonnay and has upheld the utmost respect for time in order to ensure the cuvee has an opportunity to reach its full expression

Timeline:

1640: Native to Lorraine, the family relocated to Champagne around 1640. In Reims, the Henriots engaged in textile and wine brokerage. Little by little, the family acquired vineyards

1791: Acquisition of the Hôtel des Douanes and the Fermes Royales (built in 1760 by the architect Legendre in honour of King Louis XV) by Nicolas Henriot

1794: Nicolas Henriot married Apolline Godinot. Together, they developed a fascination for the culture of the vine and production of wines of quality1808: After the death of her husband, Apolline Henriot decided to continue to develop the vineyards and refine the style of the wines. This young, 33 year-old woman set forth her name and founded Veuve Henriot Ainé.

1850: Henriot was declared Official Supplier to the Imperial and Royal Court of Austria. The house was directed at the time by Ernest Henriot, grandson of Apolline.

1880: Paul Henriot, nephew of Ernest Henriot, married Marie Marguet, who owned vines in the Côtes des Blancs

1905: The brevet of supplier was granted to Alexandre Henriot by Franz-Joseph II, Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

1926: Etienne Henriot, son of Paul, who had trained as an agronomist, took over the management of the House. With great vision, he expanded the house’s viticultural domain, which then covered nearly 110 hectares (275 acres), always acquiring parcels in the best grands crus.

1957: Death of Etienne Henriot (1889-1957). His son, Joseph Henriot, also a trained agronomist, gradually took over the reins of the family company from 1962

Viiniviljelykset

The Henriot family has retained direct cultivation of roughly 35 hectares (87 acres). Their parcels are scattered among the Vallée de la Marne (Mareuil and Ay, a Grand Cru); la Montagne de Reims (Avenay, a Premier Cru); and the Côte des Blancs (Epernay, notably le Clos l’Abbé, and Chouilly, a Premier Cru). These vineyards supply fifteen to twenty percent of its needs. To supply the rest, the house depends primarily on growers who share its standards of quality. This approach provides a very large palette of crus for its blends, one of the keys to its expertise.

The vineyards it uses are situated throughout the appellation. The house is fortunate to have access to Grands and Premiers Crus, particularly in the Côte des Blancs, stronghold of the chardonnay variety which dominates in its blends: Avize, Oger, Cramant, Vertus and others. Pinot noir is selected principally from crus on the northern slope of the Montagne de Reims, such as Verzy, Verzenay and Val d’Or.
