A perfect illustration of Maison Henriot’s mastery of the assemblage, this cuvee is composed in equal parts of pinot noir and chardonnay, conferring elegance on its complex structure. Produced with respect for family tradition, this cuvee - which comes exclusively from Champagne’s Grands Crus - is made only in exceptional years.
A piercingly cold winter delayed the start of the growing season and was followed by a decidedly cool spring with some frosts in May. As a result, growth was subdued but initial flowering was good. Intense nose from the start but not very complex, showing mostly fruit with cloudberries, yellow apples and orange zest. With air the nose starts to reveal more toasty notes, brioche, toffee, browned butter and mushroom notes. A much refined nose that speaks to the mind. Still not fully developed.
As with the nose this palate starts out fairly closed but very concentrated and with a racy acidity and grapefruit like bitterness on the finish. After 30 min the wine starts to open up and delivers a very grippy and focused palate with a core of apples, citrus and tropical notes that cuts through your palate with laser like focus, surrounded by browned butter, mushrooms, coffee and caramel notes. The bitter finish turns into minerals and seems to last for ever. Almost. Perfectly structured Champagne for the long haul and absolutely stunning!
