The Story

The pleasure derived from tasting Yquem is difficult to describe.

It offers a myriad of well-balanced, complex flavours that generate even more harmonies over time. The impression that remains is reminiscent of a quote from Frédéric Dard "the silence that follows a piece by Mozart, in which the listener remains suffused with the music". This reflects the fact that Château d'Yquem stays on the palate for a remarkable long time, providing a u...

Wine Information

"A great start to the growing season, what was somewhat compromised later in the spring. Summer and autumn were very hot and dry, and this ended up being a late-ripening year. The harvest started in early October, but both volume and ripeness were largely missing. The weather was more encouraging on 15th October so picking started up again and went on for a full month. The grapes were very rich. Generous in terms of quantity, 1962 was also won...

Vintage 1962

Bordeaux Vintage Report by Tb / Although 1962 was also a fabulous year, it fell irretrievably into the shadow of 1961. The cold winter, with its biting frosts, ensured that the vines would get a much-needed rest after their hard work in 1961. The growing season started three weeks late. When the vines finally germinated in mid-June, the weather improved. Toward autumn, the weather warmed up measurably, with the resulting dryness eventually hav...

Written Notes

One last wine was served, a delicious 1962 Yquem. It was rich and decadent with candle wax aromas and brown sugar flavors. It was all brulee without the cream (95).

  • 95p

Mahogany, must and dust. All the age, but not zombified. The fruit freshness is in the past tense, but the complexity and earth of it is still very attractive. This lady's not for keeping.

  • 93p
Pale brown. It was very sophisticated and elegant wine with evident aroma of walnuts on the nose and fruit sweetness, which also was refined, complex and with fine balance. Dazzling performance. It can last for additional 10-15 years.
  • 93p
D 1 h / G 1.5 h Deep, amber colour. Nutty, raisiny nose that lacks complexity. Medium-sweet palate with mellow acidity. Intense flavours – burnt sugar, roasted coffee and chocolate. Moderately long finish with opulent but less elegant style.
