The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. Vintage 2020

In Bordeaux, the heat resulted in early flowering. Also, this led to an early harvest after a very hot summer. As a starting point, there is great maturity in the grapes, and one can expect a more opulent vintage than in the last few years.

Written Notes

In the glass, the Château Latour 2020 presents itself with an intense, deep, and opaque garnet-red color. Its impressive clarity and vibrancy are immediately apparent, showcasing the wine's purity and concentration.

Nose: The nose is a beguiling and complex bouquet of aromas that command attention. It opens with a symphony of dark fruits, with black currants, blackberries, and cassis at the forefront. These fruit aromas are beautifully complemented by delicate floral notes of violets and hints of crushed rose petals. Subtle nuances of cedarwood, pencil shavings, and a touch of cigar box add depth and sophistication.

On the palate, Château Latour 2020 exhibits the grandeur and elegance for which it is celebrated. It is a full-bodied wine that seamlessly integrates its flavors. The dark fruit profile is lush and expressive, with flavors of black cherry, blackberry jam, and ripe plums taking center stage. The wine's texture is sumptuous, and its tannins are refined, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. Layers of complexity unfold with each sip, revealing notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and a subtle earthiness.

Château Latour 2020 boasts impeccable structure, characterized by its finely grained tannins that impart both strength and finesse to the wine. The acidity is vibrant and precise, contributing to a long and harmonious finish. This wine exemplifies the perfect balance between power and grace, showcasing a remarkable sense of harmony and potential for aging. The finish is exceptionally long and resonant, echoing the wine's dark fruit and spice notes. It lingers on the palate for an extended period, leaving an indelible impression of richness, complexity, and a hint of minerality.

The obvious power, elegance, length, and strength are impossible to ignore, as it is present here in spades. The palate, with its endless layers of sweet, ripe, black fruits grabs, holds, and focuses your attention on what's in your glass. There is a remarkable persistency of flavor, flawlessly ripe tannins, and a haunting purity to the fruits, with a white pepper and Asian spice edge that shines in the over 60-second finish. This is a Latour of power, elegance, purity of fruit, and silky textures with the ability to age for generations. When it is eventually released, do not miss it. This is the wine of the vintage! Drink from 2030-2075.
