The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. Written Notes

The 1870 was one of the very last, old, grand vintages before the destruction brought about by phylloxera. Mildew attacked Latour´s vineyards from 1879 to 1887 and together with phylloxera, ruined almost the entire vineyard. It was not until 1920 that the whole Latour vineyard was replanted with American rootstock. A fine looking, beautiful old bottle. Not recorked. Level was mid-shoulder. Decanted 15 minutes.
Good mature, clean and bright colour. Sound and open nose with chocolate, truffels, mint, cedar, and ripe fruit aromas – very promising. Rich and long, even a bit youtful. Some traces of oxidation. Still very much breathing, but on its way out faster than we were hoping. A rare, old-style, big and fruity Latour, which still has depth and power left. The previous bottles that we have tasted (one château- and one probable Whitwham-bottling) were not this good.
