A perfect illustration of Maison Henriot’s mastery of the assemblage, this cuvee is composed in equal parts of pinot noir and chardonnay, conferring elegance on its complex structure. Produced with respect for family tradition, this cuvee - which comes exclusively from Champagne’s Grands Crus - is made only in exceptional years.
Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. This ...
Utterly wonderful right from the start! It is impossible to miss the similarity to the magical 88. Its sonority is identical, but the 90 is oilier, more concentrated and somewhat less acid. I have to drink them side by side to be sure of which I prefer. Or else it is only a question of occasion and development curve. Buy everything you can find! Unfortunately slightly drab sometimes – a dip or a phase, or what?
Henriot Cuvée Enchanteleurs 1990
Magnum deg. 2011
Open, very intense and youthful nose that feels very focused and precis with orchard fruit, white peach, Williams pear, nuts, oat and more toasty notes. There's a lactic touch to it that luckily disappears with air.
Full bodied, very concentrated and and focused palate with huge mid-palate grip and flavors of orchard fruit, white peach, apples and Williams pear that turns more toasty over the first hour in the glass. Long and concentrated finish that's filled with citrus and minerality. This is very young is mostly structure today and will need plenty of time to open up and develop further but when it does it will be spectacular!
