Six generations of the Krug family have produced Champagne at this prestigious house since 1843, with president Rémi Krug's nephew, Oliver, directing the business today. Despite a very warm summer during 1995 in the Cham-pagne area, this bubbly displays elegance and refinement. After the first fermentation in small oak barrels, the blending of various lots and almost 10 years in bottle (during which the second fermentation occurred), the wine was disgorged early in 2005 before being released this year. 1,700 cases imported

Score: 98 , WineSpectator.com (Top 100), December 2006

The 1995 Vintage provides a fascinating contrast to the 1996. This is a tightly wound, sinewy Champagne loaded with brioche, toasted oak, lemon rind, flowers and minerals. The mousse is extremely fine and the style decidedly more linear and fresh than the 1996. Though deceptively medium-bodied in style, the wine appears to be built for extended cellaring.. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2025.

Score: 95 Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate (180), December 2008

The Story

Unique to the House of Krug, every Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, to reveal the expression of a particular year. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. To narrate this story, Krug has blended very expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Krug Vintage is the story of a year as seen by Krug; there are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages.

Wine Information

The 1995 vintage Krug shows today its immense potential, with a smoky, lemony fruit character and hints of brioche, mineral, ripe white fruits and honey. On the palate the wine is majesterial and full, while retaining crisp acidity and vibrant length. A very rich and luxurious Krug.

Vintage Krug is one of the most long-lived wines from the Champagne region, with bottles still lively and fresh after 80 years of aging – although not that many wine lovers have the patience to age their Krug for this amount of time. Like all Champagne, Krug is released when it is ready to be drunk, but Krug 1995 will definitely reward at least 10 – 15 years of cellaring before consumption.

As many as 20 different lots of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from a variety of sources are blended together to form Vintage Krug. The majority of the grapes come from the finest vineyards in Le Mesnil, Aÿ, Trépail, and Ambonnay.

This wine is not the most typical of the Krug style, but reflects instead the particularity of the vintage. It is only made in exceptional years, and is only produced when there is a sufficient difference between the vintage wine and the Grande Cuvee.

Vintage 1995

A welcome relief after some difficult years in the region. Quantity-wise, it was the seventh high-cropping year in a row. But, in 1995, the quality also excelled, and particularly so for Chardonnay. There were significant frost damages during the spring and the warm but wet weather in the summer ignited mildew and rot problems. The vines cropped heavily and rigorous vineyard work and selection during harvest led to best results. Harvest commenced on September 18th and yielded grapes of a fine balance of sugar and acidity. The vintage has turned out to be much better than first expected and it has emerged from the shadow of the much-hyped 1996. This vintage is marked by elegance of its inviting fruitiness, beautiful balance and slow-building finesse. Its greatest examples include Charles Heidsieck Blanc des Millénaires, Dom Pérignon (whole range), Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Bollinger R.D, Krug Vintage and Taittinger Comtes de Champagne.

Written Notes

I think five bottles of 1995 Krug went down the hatch by the time we sat down to dinner. The 1995 is definitely getting better with age, and it is starting to thicken a bit. It was still rustic yet bready, with nice oil and vitamin flavors, flirting with outstanding (94+).

Some will remember this very good vintage Krug as a farewell vintage for Remy Krug who retired in May 2007. Bright, green yellow and pale colour with rich amount of small bubbles. Persistant and fresh nose delivers green apples, lemon and steely foie gras aromas. Extremely crisp taste with mineral rich mousse. Delicate texture with moderate fruit intensity of green apples and yeasty brioche aromas. Lingering long and very persistent lemony finish being still one-dimensional but very balanced. Although wine is being crisp and fresh now, it has potential to grow much bigger wine in future by 2020.

Tasted blind wine 11. Golden hue, seemingly evolved here, slow bead. On the nose it’s not overly expressive, quite marine, touch of tangerine, this is very creamy on the impressive palate, again the energy is impressive here a level up on the 1998, fierce but controlled, really fine here. A powerhouse but retains the elegant balance. Probably the wine of the night. 97/100

Krug 1995 is characterized by a lustrous pale gold colour and playful streams of bubbles. On the nose, delights by its rare combination of ripeness and delicacy, its fragrant hints of white flowers, freshly baked gingerbread and candied fruits alongside ripe melon. In the mouth, Krug 1995 is generous and full, velvety with a hint of almonds and honey, perfectly balanced with fresh citrus fruits, even pink grapefruit enhanced by a remarkable finish.

"I have a preference for the 1995 Brut Vintage, as it shows quite a bit more freshness and verve than the 1998. Mint, dried flowers, truffles and bright fruit are some of the nuances that flow from this precise, focused Champagne. The vibrant, refreshing finish makes it impossible to resist a second taste. Among recent vintages, the 1996 has rightly received a ton of attention here, while the 1995 is likely to remain an insider’s wine that is available at more favorable pricing.

There is a toasty and strong aroma of autolysis in this champagne that is in accordance with the house’s tradition, along with nuances of vanilla. The taste is rich, well-bodied and perfectly harmonious with aromas of apple, nuts and toast. It lives up to all the expectations of Krug fans. A long, lingering taste and extremely fine structure promises a long life cycle, but there is no reason why this wine could not be enjoyed right now.

Inside Information

The deep golden color implies just how rich this wine will be. The 1995 vintage provided a baroque canvas of flavors that seems weightier and more robust than a classic Krug, but no less fascinating. The wine is downright huge, aggressive in its savory power, in its aching acidity and persistent minerality. Brusque and mouthcoating in its richness at 11 years of age, this will begin to mellow as it turns 15 or 20.
