The Story

Time’s second revelation of Krug Vintage. A very limited number of bottles of each Krug Vintage are kept in ideal conditions at the House of Krug cellars. Tasted and appraised, they are waiting to blossom into a second life, a life that exalts time and reveals a new facet of this Champagne. Krug Vintage thus becomes Krug Collection. Time then takes on a new, hitherto unknown meaning.

Wine Information

Probably one of the most generous yields in the history of Champagne, the year 1982 is a « classic » in terms of climate throughout the year.

Heat in June, July, August and September with sufficient rain at the right moments over vines which had rested well after the previous small crops, gave us wines of excellent ripeness and fairly full character despite a record size crop. The House did not hesitate to create Krug 1982 as the year had a very interesting character and story to tell.

Krug 1982 is the result of blending opulent and powerful Pinot Noirs (54%), rich Chardonnays (30%) and spicy Meuniers (16%). Krug 1982 is on the full bodied side of Krug vintages, not as big as the 1959 or 1976; we see it more in the heritage of the renowned 1964 or even 1953.

Vintage 1982

One of the decade’s best vintages, which can be excellently enjoyed already now. The winter was cold and the spring cool. The cold weather moved the start of the growth season and enabled the vines to avoid spring frosts. The inflorescences, which bloomed in June, enjoyed perfect conditions. The warm and sunny weather continued through summer all the way until early September, when refreshing and needed rains arrived in the area. They saved the grapes from overmaturing. The result was an excellent vintage, which in addition to being high-quality was quantitatively one of the biggest harvests ever. The vintage was favorable especially for blanc de blancs. Stylistically, the wines are giving, heavy and rich in nuances. They are now at an excellent age, but can still endure maturing 5–7 years on the average.

Written Notes

Krug Collection 1982 / Was given the wine blind at the same time as Olivier Krug and Eric Lebel and had no difficulty in finding 97 points / ut its identity by the aroma alone since the vintage character is so pronounced. Completely mature with a fairytale, great, rounded, vanilla-creamy butterscotch aroma. Deep and chocolaty with a little dried fruit and figs before it accelerates again on the tongue and then fades away with pleasing nuttiness.

Let’s get to the juice. We started with a 1982 Krug Collection, which was finally showing some mature aromas. My knock on all the recently released Krug Collections is that they are tough to drink upon release, delivering more rocket fuel and razors than fruit and flavor. This bottle was toasty and tasty with a balanced, nutty finish. ‘Great’ was written once, and the ’82 was finally starting to come into its own, although it still seemed young forever (95).
