The Story

Unique to the House of Krug, every Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, to reveal the expression of a particular year. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. To narrate this story, Krug has blended very expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Krug Vintage is the story of a year as seen by Krug; there are as many stories as there are K...

Wine Information

For many people, there are champagnes and then there is Krug; that is how legendary this house is. Established in 1843 by Johann-Joseph Krug, the house has for six generations admirably stuck to its quality principles, to its generous burnt style and to its fabulous ageing potential. After the retirement of the fifth-generation brothers Henri and Rémi Krug, the house has been looking for its place within the LVMH Group. After two years at the ...

Vintage 1985

Severe winter temperatures and spring frosts did great damage, leaving many in the region unhopeful of a good year. The destruction was excessive especially in the northern Montagne de Reims, in the hillside vineyards west of Reims and in the Aube. The early summer weather did not raise the hopes, but finally fine September weather came to the rescue and yields ended up being better than feared (albeit tiny, 6,827 kg/ha) when picking commenced...

Written Notes

The first was a 1985 Krug, original bottling. While many have downplayed the quality of this vintage for Krug over the years, I have always been a fan. Its nose was lemony, tangy and waxy. It had a big, spritely palate that was long and outstanding. There was less vanilla and more citrus, and great verve and acidity to this zippy and happy 1985 (95).

Fully mature, bronze colour and rather a sluggish bead. Quite a bit of mushrooms and toast on the nose but wonderful freshness on the palate. Great balance. Powerful but not at all sweet. Fully resolved. Very impressive.

Krug Vintage Champagne 1985 / 100 points / I was speechless when I tasted this Champagne. Although I had the 1985 Krug before, in a magnum format, it was magnificent. A perfect wine that has evolved so beautifully that it has more layers and depth than many Grand Cru red Burgundies. Full bodied yet delicate with toasted hazelnuts, brioche and biscuit notes. Very long finish. A perfect vintage to enjoy now, at nearly 30 years of age.
