To the delight of Krug Lovers around the world, a very limited number of Krug Vintage bottles are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars. They are tasted and appraised as they wait to blossom into a second life. The Cellar Master might then decide that some Krug Vintages reveal a new personality and become Krug Collection. Krug Collection is a tribute to time sublimation: maturity exposes hidden facets, depth and new flavours, while g...

Written Notes
“Collection” merely means that the Champagne has been stored in Krug's cellars much longer than usual. Disgorged after six or seven years, the '69 is smoky and tough and is reminiscent of the austere 1969 Bollinger R. D. Beautiful and ultra-sophisticated.
The 1969 Krug Collection magnum that followed was the first of two magnums served at the table, and its initial aromas were vanilla, dry honey and musk. It took off like a rocket ship, but its palate was overly dry, wafery and citrus peely in character. The Rev found it ‘a little mushroomy,’ or perhaps he was describing his pre-dinner ritual. It was lighter than the DP and went in a shellfish and sour direction (92M).
A very early vintage.
White truffles on the nose, savoury. Makes me think of Angelo Gaja (Krug’s distributor in Italy, I believe.) Quite delicate again but heavier than the 1973. Long. A bit of damp-plaster aroma. More solid and austere than modern vintages. Very, very dry finish. Lots of acidity (like 1988). Hint of something very slightly fishy.
