The NV Grande Cuvée is absolutely stellar. This is one of the very best Grande Cuvées I can remember tasting. The flavors are bright, focused and beautifully delineated throughout, all of which make me think the wine will age well for many, many years. Lemon peel, white flowers, crisp pears, smoke and crushed rocks race across the palate in a vibrant, tense Champagne that epitomizes finesse. This release is based on the 2005 v...

The Story

Krug Grande Cuvée is the archetype of Krug’s philosophy of craftsmanship and savoir faire: A blend of around 120 wines from ten or more different vintages, some of which may reach 15 years of age. Blending so many vintages gives Krug Grande Cuvée its unique fullness of flavours and aromas, its incredible generosity and its absolute elegance - something impossible to express with the wines of just a single year. Its exceptional finesse is the r...

Wine Information

As you taste it, notes of toasted bread, hazelnut, nougat, barley sugar and jellied fruits may take you by surprise. You may even taste hints of apples still on the tree, flowers in bloom, ripe and dried fruit, almonds, marzipan, gingerbread, sweet spices and even brioche and honey. You may also notice its exceptional freshness in the mouth, with rich and tangy flavours of lemon and grapefruit enhanced by the subtlety of its fine and elegant b...

Krug Grand Cuvee 163rd Edition – The first of the new ‘editions’ (in the sense that this was the first to display that info on the label), this has 2007 as the base wine. Stonefruit, red berries, bergamot, coffee bean notes. Impeccably balanced with a gentle finish, though great length. The length one expects from Krug, which is surely their hallmark. 96.

This is fantastic. Delicate yet intense nose with slightly toasty, lemony fruit. With time in the glass this becomes progressively more toasty and rich. The palate has lovely crispness and long, minerally, subtly toasty fruit. Almost perfect. Excellent 95/100

  • 95p

The 165th edition is comprised of 127 wines and opens with a beautiful, very clear and delicate bouquet that displays very fine toast, nougat, hazelnut, ripe and dried fruit (raisins), floral and concentrated (and refreshing) citrus fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a generously rich, mature yet fresh, highly finessed and elegant prestige cuvée with a long, complex, tensioned and beautifully mineral finish with tangy citrus flavors. Under perfect storing conditions, the 165ème Édition should gain even more depth and finesse during the next 10 to 15, maybe even 20 years.

Towards lemon yellow, small bubbles. Apples, minerals, detailed, richer nose, brioche and yeast. Fresh acidity, lively mousse, quite intense, fresh, detailed, nuanced, more focused again, long. 93

Imported by Moet Hennessy USA.  Alcohol 12.5%. This already smells complex with a young aroma of apple. In the mouth this is a youthful wine with assertive bubbles then a very fine mousse. The yellow fruit and gentle baking spices are of good complexity and long duration. **** Now – 2037.

Krug Grande Cuvée 164th Edition charms already now with its charmingly pure elegance but there will be lots more delivered after 10 years of ageing! I recommend to enjoy Grande Cuvées pre-163 Edition for next decade and keep the editions 163 onwards in the cellar for a decade or so.

This was the perfect accompaniment to the wonderful hors d’oeuvres. Great freshness combined with intense citrus and ripe gamey, savoury and honeyed notes. Powerful but very delicate and layered. Really lovely. 94/100

GRANDE CUVEE. 163rd Edition: Disgorged winter 2014-15. (Based on 2007; plus about 40% of reserve wines. 35 other wines dating back to 1999) ID: 115003. 183 wines from 12 different 12. Finesse driven rich and highly complex nose. Yellow apple, vanilla, Patisserie, peach, very feminine and yet deep and serious. Superb complexity on palate with the same amazing combination of intensity and elegance on palate. Soft mousse and very vinous. Very Krug. Beautiful play of density and acidity in the finish. Candied, caramelized notes and ripe yellow fruit. Great blend of the 183 “elements”. (plots, batches) 92+p

Antonio Galloni 91 Drink: 2013 - 2020 $118-$442 (169)
The NV Brut Grande Cuvee emerges from the glass with freshly cut flowers, almonds, pastry and spices. This is a relatively floral, bright Grande Cuvee with fewer of the oxidative qualities that are typical of the house style. According to Krug's ID Code, this bottle is based on the 2004 vintage, which explains the wine's tense, taut personality. Another year or two on the cork will only help the wine gain expressiveness and depth. Today, the Grande Cuvee is quite reticent and not showing the full breadth of its personality. This bottle carries ID Code: 211024. Disgorged: Summer 2011.Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020.

There are no new vintage wines from Krug, but is always interesting to revisit these wines as they develop so much over time. The biggest news at Krug is the addition of ID Codes to the NV wines, which gives readers the opportunity to get more information on the wines (including disgorgement dates) through Krug's website. It would be great to see more of the larger houses follow suit.
