RAY JORDANTOP SHELF WINE / "This is a blend of shiraz with smaller contributions from Grenache and mataro and a splash of viognier to spice things up. this is one of the best I have tasted of this wine. Has a beautiful fruit purity, with spicy gingery character. The perfume emerges so beautifully from the bouquet with other spicy bright fruit aromas. Appealing seamless palate."

The Story

The shiraz, grenache, mataro, viognier blend is a tribute to Henry Evans who planted the first vineyard of seven acres at Keyneton in 1853. He quickly developed a reputation for producing the best wines in the southern colony. Following Henry’s death in 1868, his widow Sarah exercised her temperance convictions by closing the winery and uprooting all the winegrapes. This blend highlights the historical introduction of southern French and Spanish varieties to South Australia in those early pioneering days and reflects the history, religion and culture of the Barossa.

Wine Information

The 2016 vintage began with well below-average winter rainfall, followed by a warm and dry spring, which enhanced flowering and fruit set. Low disease pressure was maintained by one of the hottest Decembers on record, though temperatures cooled down in the New Year and rainfall around veraison in late January brought relief to the dry-grown vineyards. This was followed by further rainfall in early March with an earlier harvest as predicted due to an early Easter. Open, light and airy vine canopies allowed for good flavour, sugar and colour, and mature tannins to develop at harvest, which was overall characterised by average yields but very high quality.

Written Notes

A mix of Barossa and Eden Valley fruit – 66% Shiraz, 15% Grenache, 10% Mataro and 9% Viognier (which is co-fermented with the Shiraz). 10 months in seasoned French oak hogsheads.

Henry Evans planted the first vineyard at Keyneton back in 1853 and things were going very well, until Henry fell off the perch in 1868 (that year again). His widow, Sarah, was less impressed by his wines than others and, influenced by her temperance convictions, ripped up the vines and closed the winery.

Floral, plush, juicy and quite delicious. Fine aromatics which linger. Some will love this style, and I confess I certainly found it a joy to drink, but others may feel that the Viognier interferes just a little. It is certainly noticeable. 91. $37.

66% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 10% Mataro, 9% Viognier. Aged for 10 months in American oak hogsheads.
Sweet spice, jammy fruit, fine tannins and long, spicy complexity on the finish. In fact, the fruit makes a welcome return too – this is impressively persistent. What wonderful typicality – it really couldn't be from anywhere else than South Australia. There's a hint of charred meat on the finish. Opulent, expressive, moreish. (RH)
