Robert Parker's Wine Advocate / One of Australia's legendary icons is Henschke's Shiraz Hill of Grace. The 2002 is 100% Shiraz aged 18 months in 100% new French and American oak. It boasts an inky/blue/purple color as well as extraordinary uplifted aromatics of acacia flowers, ground pepper, espresso roast, blackberries, cassis, chocolate, and smoke. This stacked and packed, full-bodied Shiraz possesses formidable concentration, moderately hig...

The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. The Shiraz vines – many now over 140 years old – are among the world's oldest genetic Shiraz plant material. It is remarkable that the vineyard remained intact considering the economic uncertainty an...

Wine Information

Winemaker Notes:Very deep crimson in color. Rich complex aromas of plum, prune, blackberry and blueberry with licorice, tar, exotic spices, chocolate, cedar and mint. The rich, complex palate is lush, dense and concentrated with layers of flavors and textures. Excellent acid/fruit balance, velvety tannins and exceptional length.

Vintage 2002

Australia 2002 was a cold year with plenty of winter and spring rain to support the vines for the year. Summer and fall were completely dry. The summer was the coldest on record. Fall had one of the warmest endings. All of this meant that we had very low yields of grapes and produced high quality wines. The grapes had a very good scent (nose and taste, more floral than usual), good concentration and good acidity. A great year for whites and ma...

Written Notes

There was one more bottle ordered off the list, because I’m a ‘just one more bottle’ kind of guy. ‘Rosemary, super dark, balanced and elegant’ came from the crowd. This was a great red for cheese, full of black raspberry flavors. It was a 2002 Henschke Hill of Grace. It was an Aussie wine to make one say ‘oy oy oy’ (95).

The 2002 Hill of Grace has very intense, deep, dark-red colour. Rich complex nose holds a developed bouquet of truffles and blackberries, spices and toast with intense ripe dark fruit aromas. The wine is full-bodied on the palate with muscular tannins, ripe intense dark fruitiness and balancing moderate acidity with well integrated alcohol adding richness to the long finish. Cedary and spicy oak aromas add complexity to the palate. Already very drinkable and concentrated wine which has many years ahead.
