The Story

Mount Edelstone (from the German 'Edelstein' meaning gemstone) is a single dry grown Shiraz vineyard planted by Ronald Angas in 1918 and through the 1920s. Written Notes

Crimson with brick red hues. Sweet red and black fruit aromas with savoury herbal notes of sage, bay leaf and black pepper, and a hint of leather and roast meats. The palate is lush and complex with dark fruit, chocolate and dried herb flavours, and textural layers of fine, velvety tannins for a long, elegant finish.

The lead-up to the 1992 vintage saw a late wet winter, although the yearly rainfall was 50mm below average. The mild spring was ideal for flowering and encouraged excellent berry set. A long, dry, cool summer with the coolest January on record delayed harvest. Despite the predictions being just above average, actual yields were only 10% less than the big 1990 vintage.

Exceptional’ vintage. pH 3.39, TA 5.9g/L, 13.5% alc.
Rich and heavy with sediment. Dark chocolate, cinnamon and earth, the palate luscious and properly softened. It’s silken and evolved and concentrated, inky and long and satisfyingly cocoa powder sweet. Everything you would want in a 20 year old Australian Shiraz really, looking twenty years old but with a wonderful mid palate drive and fine tannins. Lovely wine! Unexpectedly lovely even considering the unheralded vintage. 18.7/20 95/100

Deep medium crimson. Complex blackberry seaweedy aromas with some biscuity/tropical oak. Palate is very savoury with blackberry fruit, plenty of savoury bisquity/malt characters, fine chocolate/lacey tannins building up quite firm and sinewy. 18.5 points (93/100).
