The Story

Nicolaus Stanitski, a Henschke ancestor, originally planted the Hill of Grace vineyard during the 1860s above the Barossa Valley. During the 1950s Cyril Henschke took his family concern back to wine and established the Hill of Grace label in 1956. The Shiraz vines – many now over 140 years old – are among the world's oldest genetic Shiraz plant material. It is remarkable that the vineyard remained intact considering the economic uncertainty an...

Written Notes

The 1972 vintage in South Australia was notable for its cool growing season and moderate yields following a series of warmer years. The conditions produced wines of fine structure and aromatic intensity rather than sheer power. At Henschke’s famed Hill of Grace vineyard — with its century-old Shiraz vines rooted in deep loam and clay soils — the vintage yielded fruit of remarkable concentration, balance, and elegance. It is regarded as one of the standout Hill of Grace vintages of the early 1970s.

Brick-garnet core with tawny edges, showing the graceful evolution of over five decades in bottle.

A hauntingly complex bouquet of dried rose petal, leather, cedar, and old cigar box layered with sweet spices and a lingering note of dark truffle. Beneath the tertiary tones, faint echoes of blackberry, plum compote, and black olive still flicker through, speaking of the wine’s noble Shiraz origin.

Silky, ethereal, and beautifully resolved. The fruit has mellowed into a tapestry of savoury and earthy flavors — dried cherry, mocha, forest floor, and sweet tobacco — carried by ultra-fine tannins and a thread of vibrant acidity that continues to give the wine lift and freshness. The finish is long, elegant, and hauntingly persistent, echoing spice and dried herbs.

A majestic, mature expression of Hill of Grace, showing the hallmark grace, depth, and balance that define the vineyard. The 1972 remains a testament to the vineyard’s ability to produce wines of longevity and soul — now fully mature but still captivating in its aromatic detail and finesse.

Fully mature; best enjoyed now and over the next few years while it retains its delicate perfume and structure.
