The Story

To the delight of Krug Lovers around the world, a very limited number of Krug Vintage bottles are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars. They are tasted and appraised as they wait to blossom into a second life. The Cellar Master might then decide that some Krug Vintages reveal a new personality and become Krug Collection. Krug Collection is a tribute to time sublimation: maturity exposes hidden facets, depth and new flavours, while gaining structure and complexity. Krug Collection is always a wonderful discovery, a deeper story of the Krug Vintage.

Wine Information

Rémi Krug was kind enough to tell us a bit about his own, personal recollections of the 1928 Krug:
“I got my first taste of the 1928 at my grandfather’s house, where each of the five grandchildren took turns visiting for lunch every week, each on our own day. My day was Thursday. Because the middle of the week was free at that time in France, I got to stay at my grandparents’ house after lunch and listen to stories about their lives, our family, the town and the wars - this was something about which they had a lot to say!

At lunch I always got a small drop of Krug in a tiny children’s champagne flute as well as Bordeaux – this is how I found most of the Bordeaux I adore. The Krug was, naturally, a Grand Cuvée, but once or twice a year we got to enjoy the famous Krug 1928 – I can still remember the rich, tender, enchanting magic in those few drops of divine nectar from my childhood.

Vintage 1928

Champagne Vintage by Richard Juhlin / The vintage of the century! Krug from this year is considered by many experts to be the most perfect champagne ever made. More than eighty years old, champagne is always a gamble, and I regret to inform you that I am no longer equally impressed with this powerful vintage as I was earlier. Certainly, there are great bottles— and the acidity is always impressive—but most are pitted by maderisation, unlike the delicious 1921. The major exception is, of course, my best champagne experience—the light and magical 1928 Pol Roger Grauves.

Written Notes

One of the most sought-after and legendary Champagnes that has been made. Deep, vegetal, and grand nutty scent. Warm, forceful, and majestic taste. Actually, nothing less than a scandal that it did not even place among the 100 foremost Champagnes at the Millennium Tasting.

Very good, goldish and youthful colour. Surprisingly fresh on the nose. Very much alive and looks much younger than it should. Superb concentration, very profound. “Still young” and very complex. Gentle, fresh, meaty rich wine. There is plenty of individuality present here. Held up brilliantly, and got better and better in the glass. This must be the best champagne ever made – or is this just my wild imagination... who cares, at least I don’t. The taste and the image both deserve What more could I add to that – an absolutely perfect experience!
