The Story

This wine is named as a tribute to Johann Gottlieb Rosenzweig, one of the early Barossa Lutheran pioneers who settled at Parrot Hill in Eden Valley. Their toil, perseverance and conservatism in hardship has meant the many generations that followed have rejoiced in the riches of those efforts. Shiraz, growing on the fertile slopes in the Eden Valley region, is just one of those blessings.

The wine was produced from a small selection of low-yielding dry-grown shiraz vines from the Hill of Grace vineyard, named the Post Office block, that were a mere 23 years old at the time of picking and therefore considered too young for inclusion into Hill of Grace Shiraz. The quality of the grapes from this selection produced a wine that was too good to be declassified and warranted a separate bottling and limited release. The Post Office ruins are on the land that was previously Rosenzweig property, the Rosenzweig name translating from German to ‘rose twig’.

Written Notes

Freshly baked ginger bread with red plum, red currant, licorice, spice and blueberry, as well as violet and blueberry. This has a very plush and smoothly honed palate with ripe blackberry and blueberry flavors and such plush, silky tannins with a long, pure drive into the elegant yet dense finish. Dark plums and blackberries hold long. From vines in the Hill of Grace Vineyard, planted in 1989. Drink or hold. Glass stopper.

Deep crimson. Fresh blackberry, mulberry, espresso aromas with roasted chestnut, sage notes. Generous and inky with deep set blackberry, mulberry, roasted coffee flavours, underlying roasted chestnut vanilla oak notes, lovely mid-palate richness persistent fine looseknit chalky – al-dente tannins and integrated mineral acidity. Finishes slinky firm with plentiful sweet fruit notes. Buoyant, generous and impactful with superb density, vim and vigour. A very strong sub-regional expression that unleashes the atmospheric spirit of the Gnadenberg enclave of the Eden Valley. From 27-year-old “Post Office Block” vines, a subset of the Hill of Grace Vineyard. 14.5% Alc, Vinolok. Drink 2025-2045 – 97 points

Matured in 100% French oak hogsheads for 18 months (30% new oak).

Full Vinolok-stoppered bottle 1,210 g. 100% 27-year-old Shiraz grown on one single 0.94-ha block on the edge of the 4-ha Henschke Hill of Grace vineyard in the Eden Valley wine region, using organic and biodynamic practices. This is from the Post Office Block 3 and is being monitored as a scientific exercise to see at what vine age the wine starts to taste like Hill of Grace proper. Picked 14 March. Matured in 30% new and 70% seasoned French hogsheads for 18 months.
Very interesting to taste this alongside Hill of Grace 2016. The colour looks a little paler and more evolved: mid garnet and less purple than Hill of Grace. Very interesting savoury nose with everything apparently in place. Strong rockpool sort of nose. You could just imagine the sea washing over rocks… Gentle tannins and great power without flashiness. I don't see how anyone would be disappointed in this even if it is less concentrated than the Hill of Grace 2016. Some camphor on the finish. Tannins very much in the background. I poured this into my young wine decanter straight after tasting and Nick and I shared about half the bottle at dinner. 24 hours later, poured from the decanter, it had really mellowed with the fruit dominant and no suggestion whatsoever that this was too early to drink it. Does sweet tar sound off-putting? It's not meant to as this is really pretty lovely and finishes very pure – though there may be more tightly wound potential in the Mount Edelstone.
