Exceptional auction of Krug Private Cuvée 1915 / The prestigious lot went under the hammer for a record $116,000.
Maison Krug was celebrating a truly special anniversary lastyear, the centenary of World War I, which was closely linked to Krug’s own history. In conjunction with the commemorations, Krug auctioned unique lot at Sotheby’s New York: a once in a lifetime experience for four people to discover the history of Krug, followed by an exceptional tasting of Krug Private Cuvée 1915.
On Friday, 25 September, a “once in a lifetime experience” was auctioned at Sotheby’s New York to celebrate the centenary of Krug Private Cuvée 1915. The lot includes a two-day visit for four people to Krug, for a discovery of its vineyards and rich history, as well as the city of Reims and emblematic sites. The guests will be plunged into the distinctive context of 1915, when this rare vintage – only four bottles of which remain in Maison Krug cellars – was made.
During their visit to the cellars of the famed Champagne house, the guests will discover the moving history of the Krug family, which offered protection to many Reims families throughout World War I while continuing to produce champagne. Making such an exceptional vintage in 1915 was an incredible feat, rendered possible by the courage and tenacity of Jeanne Krug, who managed the House while her husband, Joseph Krug II, was a prisoner of war.
The immersion into the heart of Krug will culminate with a tasting of one of the remaining bottles of Krug Private Cuvée 2015 with Olivier Krug, two members of the tasting committee, Serena Sutclife MW, master of wine of Sotheby’s International, and the four guests. Their comments on the vintage will become the official tasting notes for the Krug Private Cuvée 1915.
The prestigious lot went under the hammer for a record $116,000.

The Story
Unique to the House of Krug, every Krug Vintage is crafted to be different, to reveal the expression of a particular year. A year with character, a year with a special story to tell in a way that Krug alone can relate. To narrate this story, Krug has blended very expressive wines from a single year, enhanced by a stay of over ten years in the cellars. Krug Vintage is the story of a year as seen by Krug; there are as many stories as there are Krug Vintages.
