The Story
Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilises fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy.

1961 Grange Penfolds
The 1961 Grange was the first to use grapes from the cool-climate Coonawarra district. Since its birth Grange has been made from grapes only from Magill and Morohett Vale (Adelaine) and Kalimna ( Barossa Valley) in South Ausralia.
This wine won two gold and three silver medals in Australian wine shows between 1963 and 1968. It is a blend of 92% Shiraz and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Superb looking bottle, level was by the neck. Decanted 2 hours. Very clear, dark almost black colour. Beautiful, sweet, mushroomy and clean nose. Round, soft, but not as elegant and rich as 1962. At its absolute peak. Earthy, a bit austere and agreeable length. Slightly tannic and short finish. Serious wine, yet lacks that magical strength and sumptuousness Grange generally have.

Australia / A hot, dry year with growing season rainfall well below average (despite a wet April), 1961 produced some very good red wines.
Kaiser Stuhl introduced a hermetically sealed continuous centrifuge, the first large automatic desludging centrifuge.
Hermann Paul Leopold (Leo) Buring died aged 86. Leo Buring Holdings Ltd (a public company) was taken over by Lindeman Holdings the following year.
