The Story

Bin 150 Marananga Shiraz is a sub-regional expression that is unmistakably Penfolds in character. Conceived from the ancient soils of Marananga, which lies very close to the centre of the Barossa Valley floor – slightly to the north and west, where warm dry conditions and rich red soils, provide the backbone to some of the regions best known wines.


Nose Fresh and perfumed, vibrant and lifted. Inviting. French oak cedar and clove noted, however, sandalwood, mahogany and burnt fig imply derivatives from fruit, rather than Quercus. Freshly ground coffee, clove and juniper redress a regional Barossa association. 
Palate ; Bright, tense, energetic. So many epicurean-linked complexities – star anise orange zest roast duckling, balsamic glazed beetroot, olive tapenade, black pudding. But its Shiraz! Fresh acidity and savoury tannins facilitate both grip and a tight and defined structure. The disciplined use of varied oaks (new old French American) assist.

Written Notes

I've been a believer in the exceptional quality and style of this wine from the first vintage, and this simply builds on that belief. Spends 12 months in an oak cocktail of new and used French and American oak (50/50%), and is a powerful testimony to the generations of knowledge accumulated by the Penfolds team guiding the positive use of oak without in any way diminishing the fruit. The allure of the bouquet is immediate, as is the deliciously grainy texture of the mouthfeel, and the almost decadent well of black fruit flavours.

Medium deep crimson. Intense mulberry, cassis, blackberry aromas with underlying savoury ginger oak complexity and hints of sage and cloves. Well concentrated wine with dark plum, mulberry, blackberry fruits, slinky dry tannins, attractive mid-palate richness and ginger, mocha oak notes and some meaty complexity. Finishes chocolaty firm with bitter sweet chinotto notes. 94 points – 14.5% - Drink 2020-2035.

Mulberry, summer raspberry, fresh and beautiful. The palate, while full, is vibrant and plush – there is plenty to love here. There is a real savoury character to the fruit – like red dirt, tomato leaf, saltbush. This is just gorgeous! Bin 150 holds the Barossa flag high and proud – from nowhere else in the world does Shiraz taste like this. It’s hedonistic really… unapologetic. Totally old-school – if you yearn for that ‘Barossa feeling’… this is where you’re gonna get it. 12 months in American oak (25% new), and French (7% new) hogsheads and puncheons.
