The Story

Bin 389 is often referred to as ‘Poor Man’s Grange’ or ‘Baby Grange’, in part because components of the wine are matured in the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped to build Penfolds solid reputation with red wine drinkers.

Combining the structure of Cabernet with the richness of Shiraz, Bin 389 also exemplifies Penfolds skill in judiciously balancing fruit and oak. 

Bin 389 is one of Australia’s great cellaring red wines.  First produced in 1960, its history is connected with the development of Grange and Max Schubert’s ambition of creating a ‘dynasty of wines which all bear an unmistakable resemblance to each other’.  

Named after its original binning compartment at Magill cellars, Bin 389 is the most popular wine in the Australian secondary wine market because of its heritage, consistency and reputation.

This was a good year for the 2016 Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz. This brand will never lose the image of 'baby Grange', but the reasons are different from what is generally believed. Most people think the name stems from the fact that the wine is matured in one year old American oak, previously used by Grange. However, the main reason is that the grapes for Bin 389 come from a Grange and Bin 707 selection, but which ultimately don't make it into the flagship wines. Those grapes can't go into RWT (French oak) or Bin 169 (Coonawarra only). The 2016 Bin 389 is a dark coloured, big, full-bodied wine. The wine hits you like a brick on the palate with blackberry and black currant flavours. The fruit is very concentrated and the flavours are long. The firm tannins need some time to soften (94 points).

Red fruits, crabapple florals, crushed peppercorn, Kalamata olive, poached strawberry – this is bloody delicious. Ripe raspberry, blackcurrant, red apple skins, hints of juniper, bay leaf… raw cocoa, chewy tannin. Oh boy do I love this. Plush. Lush. Plump. Structural. This. Is. Very. Good. The classically Australian cab/shiraz blend just makes so much sense: never more so than when you get 389 in the glass. The structure of the cabernet fruit marries perfectly to the plushness of the shiraz, making this a wonderful expression as a sum of its parts. 12 months in American (37% new) hogsheads. Glorious now, or well into the future.

Medium deep colour. Classical Bin 389 with fresh blackcurrant, blackberry, dark chocolate aromas and roasted chestnut, mocha notes. Deep set dark chocolate, elderberry, blackcurrant fruits , plentiful fine chocolatey textures, lovely mid palate buoyancy and mocha, roasted coconut oak complexity. Finishes long and fruit sweet with a bitter firm chocolatey plume.
