The Story

Penfolds Bin 28 is a showcase for warm-climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 is named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented, providing a substantial proportion of the fruit for this vintage. It spent 12 months in American oak, but it is all about the saturated black fruits and black licorice at the steering wheel of this multilayered, full-bodied shiraz."

Bin 28 Shiraz 2020 (A$50) – Always fun trying to decide which of the ‘28’ pair (128 or 28, because why wouldn’t you make your labelling as confusing as possible) is the pick from each release. While most assume that this is a Barossan Shiraz – given Penfolds history, understandable – these days, it is a multi-regional release. McLaren Vale, Barossa, Clare Valley and Padthaway. It was first made way back in 1959, from their famous Kalimna Vineyard, which is all Barossa, of course. A year in American hogsheads, 16% new. Maroon/purple, this opens with a hint of sweet oak at this early stage. The fruits and flavours then move into cloves, dried fruits, chocolate cake and coffee beans. Delicious and exuberant, and that whiff of oak is simply the last vestiges as it integrates. Medium length, fine tannins and an exciting future. The palate exhibits more strong dark chocolate notes. Surely ten years plus ahead of it but for me, it is perhaps more immediately approachable and generous than we see with the other 2020 reds in the Collection. 94.

Medium deep crimson. Classic dark chocolate espresso dark berry aromas with malty/ liquorice notes. Lovely choco-berry fruits, some cola/ chinotto/ roasted coffee notes, fine supple loose knit grainy tannins, very good mid-palate density and underlying savoury complexity. Finishes velvety firm and minerally. Very Penfoldsian with lovely intensity, chocolaty richness and energy. Where less can be more. McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway & Clare Valley. 12 months maturation in American oak (16% new) hogsheads.  Drink now – 2034 14.5% alc 95 points

Oak spice, red and dark plum hint of floral forestry floor spill over in a modest fashion. Palate long fruit driven mouth puckering. Like sitting in front of a log fire and then you get mocha chocolate and black tea leaves.

Another perennial favourite of the collector. Mostly McLaren Vale with Padthaway and Clare Valley. American Oak, coconut oil, cocoa and old bourbon notes dominate. Palate is very dense, inky and dry. Black plum, black raspberry and mulberry are there, but overshadowed by the power of the oak, lending more flavours of cocoa, red spices and an ironstone finish. Tannins are chunky and hang around a bit
