The Story

The chateau makes three different wines. The so-called grand vin, that is Château Latour itself, a second wine called Les Forts de Latour and a third wine simply called Pauillac. The grand vin comes from the original part of the vineyards, called the Enclos. This is the most prestigious part of the vineyard where the vines have a fine view of the Gironde estuary. The tradition in Bordeaux says that vines that overlook the water make the best w...

1964
The weather conditions

Signs of growth first appeared on 5 April but the development of vegetation was slow until the end of the month. It speeded up in May and flowering started on the 29th. The beginning of June was hot and stormy with heavy rains. The weather remained hot with occasional rainstorms. July was hot and dry, as was August. Harvest prospects were excellent. The weather in September was variable but did not impede the ...

Vintage 1964

Written Notes

I have tasted Latour 1964 more than ten times in the last decade, and it has always been a first-class claret (all the bottles have scored 92-96 points). On the last occasion in 2006 it was still very vigorous and a lovely wine, maybe even better than ever before.

Excellent looking bottle with base neck level. Decanted for two hours. Very youthful and deep bright colour. Rich, ripe and open nose with earthy and black fruit and truffle aromas. Perfectly balanced, rich and full wine, which has been developing beautifully throughout the last 15 years, building more and more intensity and complexity. It is now a multi-dimensional, fat, thick, chocolaty wine with long, attractive, slightly tannic aftertaste. Harmonious wine with a long and glorious future to come.

The 1964 Latour that followed smelled like it was from the 1980s or younger. Although it was a bit shy, it gave off this Harlan-esque impression in the nose; this was a Napa Valley Latour. The palate was wow with its rich and oily personality. Flavors of chocolate, coffee and minerals combined with a lip and ass-smacking finish. Damn, that’s the second time I wrote that this week, I must have something on my mind (95).

"Tobacco, cassis, blackberry, spice box, herbs, wet earth, cigar box and fresh cherry aromas create the perfume. The wine is medium bodied, straddling the middle ground between finesse and austerity with a hint of green notes, the wine ends with a spicy, cassis and cranberry finish. Better on the nose than the palate, this is still quite charming. However, this is not a wine to hold for future development. 92 Points"

Dark ruby, brick rim. B/C level fill, soaked cork. Liquorice, sweet tobacco, hay, some blackcurrants, gorgeous nose, some ripe tannins still, fresh acidity, quite intence, extremelly complex, almost at such a degree, that you can't decipher it all, perfect structure, truly impressive, and exceptionaly long finish.

Medium intense, tuile volour.rich, complex nose with cassis, leather, soy, medium bodied, silky structure, mellow tannins, harmonious. Decant for 2 hours. Ready now, but will keep another 10 years.
